5, record 4, Spanish, - prote%C3%ADna%20de%20la%20esp%C3%ADcula

This chemical sensing technique relies on nanoparticles consisting of gold and silica called nanoshells, invented 10 years ago at Rice by nanophotonics pioneer Naomi Halas. Nanoshells are about 20 times smaller than a red blood cell, and they can amplify light waves and focus them so tightly that scientists can use them to detect just a few molecules of a target chemical. Building catalysts directly on the surface of the nanoparticles themselves allows researchers to use the nanosensing capabilities of nanoshells to directly follow chemical reactions on the catalyst using light. 8, record 9, English, - gold%20nanoshell

The Canadian and United States governments have agreed to implement a joint in-transit container targeting program. Under this program, the US Customs Service would place unarmed analysts in Canadian marine ports. These analysts will be responsible for targeting high-risk in-transit containers for examination by Canadian customs officers. Similarly, Canada will place officers at the Ports of Newark, New Jersey, and Seattle, Washington, to target containers arriving at those ports and traveling by surface transportation to Canada. The In-transit container targeting program will also simplify the inspection process and avoid duplicate examinations that have occurred in the past. 1, record 13, English, - Canada%2FUS%20In%2Dtransit%20Targeting%20Program

1, record 13, French, - Programme%20de%20ciblage%20en%20transit%20canado%2Dam%C3%A9ricain

Nanochemistry is a new discipline concerned with the unique properties associated with assemblies of atoms or molecules on a scale between that of the individual building blocks and the bulk material.... Nanochemistry is the use of synthetic chemistry to make nanoscale building blocks of desired shape, size, composition and surface structure, charge and functionality with an optional target to control self-assembly of these building blocks at various scale-lengths. Nanochemistry uses semi-conductors that only conduct electricity in specific conductions.

Improved uniformity of the laser for-al spot profile is a necessary criterion for the success of high intensity laser fusion and to improve the quality of data from moderate intensity laser driven shock experiments in solids. Recently developed laser smoothing techniques rely on both temporal smoothing and thermal smoothing to produce uniform ablation pressures on the target surface. Thermal smoothing is not effective during the low intensity portion of a laser pulse and the resultant shock structure mirrors the residual laser nonuniformities. The impact of the first(nonuniform) shock can be diminished by using foam layers, a precursor flash, shallow angles of incidence, and by adiabatically compressing the target with a temporally long, slowly rising laser pulse. 1, record 31, English, - thermal%20smoothing

3, record 33, French, - tube%20%C3%A0%20anode%20tournante

Depolarization occurs when the polarization state changes between the transmitted and received signal. For example, changing a HH to a HV response. There are four mechanisms known to cause depolarization : a quasi-specular reflection as a result of the difference between the Fresnel reflection coefficients for a two-dimensional, smoothly undulating surface [;] a multi-scattering due to target surface roughness [;] a multiple scattering due to volume scattering [;] anisotropic properties of the targets. 3, record 35, English, - depolarization

2, record 35, French, - d%C3%A9polarisation

The angle defined by the incident radar beam and the vertical (normal) to the intercepting surface. 3, record 36, English, - incidence%20angle
Record number: 36, Textual support number: 1 CONT
The incidence angle is commonly used to describe the angular relationship between the radar beam and the ground, surface layer or a target. A change of the radar illumination angle often affects the radar backscattering behaviour of a surface or target. The incidence angle changes across the radar image swath; it increases from near range to far range. In the case of satellite radar imagery, the change of incidence angle for flat terrain across the imaging swath tends to be rather small, usually on the order of several degrees. In the case of an inclined surface(slope), the local incidence angle is defined as the angle between the incident radar beam and a line that is normal to that surface. The local incidence angle determining, in part, the brightness, or image tone, for each picture element(pixel) and slope facet, is a key element in the prominent rendition of terrain features in radar imagery. 3, record 36, English, - incidence%20angle

Optical remote sensing makes use of visible, near infrared and short-wave infrared sensors to form images of the earth's surface by detecting the solar radiation reflected from targets on the ground. Different materials reflect and absorb differently at different wavelengths. When solar radiation hits a target surface, it may be transmitted, absorbed or reflected. Different materials reflect and absorb differently at different wavelengths. The reflectance spectrum of a material is a plot of the fraction of radiation reflected as a function of the incident wavelength and serves as a unique signature for the material. 1, record 47, English, - reflectance%20spectrum

Hydrological Data Collection. In order to model the hydrology of a stream study segment over a range of flow rates, it is necessary to collect specific data defining the hydraulic boundary conditions. Boundary conditions define the target hydraulic simulation output, i. e. the desired flow rate, velocity and water surface elevation at the up-stream and down-stream ends of the segment. Hydraulic boundary are typically defined by flow rate, velocity magnitude and direction and/or water surface elevation. Boundary conditions, for instream flow analysis, are usually defined at the up-stream or down-stream boundaries of the study segment. In addition to the boundary conditions it is important to collect both quantitative and qualitative hydraulic information within the boundaries of the study segment. This additional data is used for model calibration and verification. 1, record 51, English, - hydraulic%20boundary

A kind of molecular sensing is thought to guide growing axons. The axons have specialized tips, called growth cones that can recognize the proper pathways. They do so by sensing a variety of specific molecules laid out on the surface of, or even released from, cells located along the pathway. The target itself may also release the necessary molecular cues. Removing these cues(by genetic or surgical manipulation) can cause the axons to grow aimlessly. 1, record 52, English, - molecular%20sensing

The physical adsorption method for the immobilization of enzyme is based on the physical adsorption of enzyme protein on the surface of water-insoluble carriers. This method often causes little or no conformational change of the enzyme protein, or destruction of its active center. Accordingly, if a suitable carrier for the target enzyme is found, this method may be both simple and effective. However, this method has the disadvantage that the adsorbed enzyme may leak from the carrier during utilization, because the binding force between the enzyme protein and carrier is weak. 1, record 58, English, - adsorbed%20enzyme
