L'hypothermie thérapeutique (HT) est un traitement qui a pour but de réduire les réactions biochimiques qui surviennent après une ischémie cérébrale. Elle est utilisée notamment chez les enfants qui souffrent d'encéphalopathie néonatale ou chez les adultes qui ont subi un arrêt cardiaque et repris un rythme spontané après une réanimation cardiorespiratoire (RCR). Studies have shown that lowering brain temperature even by a few degrees decreases ischemic damage. In studies of out of hospital cardiac arrest due to ventricular fibrillation(VF), induced hypothermia improves neurological outcomes.
