The ASEAN Free Trade Area(AFTA), established in 1992 to promote investment and make members a competitive production bloc in global markets, only becomes operational in 2008. It is implemented through a common preferential tariff scheme covering a broad range of agricultural products, iron, steel, petroleum and manufactured goods.
