An evolutionary radiation is an increase in taxonomic diversity or morphological disparity, due to adaptive change or the opening of ecospace. Radiations may affect one clade or many, and be rapid or gradual; where they are rapid, and driven by a single lineage's adaptation to their environment, they are termed adaptive radiations.

The Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission of UNESCO has undertaken a project jointly with the National Museum of Natural History in Leiden, Netherlands, and the Expert Center for Taxonomic Identification(EIT) in Amsterdam, Netherlands, aimed at the development of a Register of Marine Organisms, principally as a tool to assist governments in the implementation process of the Convention on Bilogical Diversity.
