The Highway No. 1 goes from St. John’s, Newfoundland and Labrador, to Tofino, British Columbia, along Southern Canada; a northwest branch, the Yellowhead Highway (Highway No. 16), through Edmonton and Jasper, reaches Prince Rupert on the Pacific. The Trans-Canada Highway was officially inaugurated on September 3, 1962; a monument in the Rogers Pass (Glacier National Park of Canada) marks the end of its construction.

La route a officiellement été inaugurée le 3 septembre 1962 au pied du monument érigé dans le col Rogers (parc national du Canada des Glaciers) pour marquer la fin des travaux.

Dans les projets de construction, la route a d'abord été décrite comme «route transcanadienne», ce qu'elle devait être. Par la suite, on en a parlé comme étant «La transcanadienne» pour signifier qu'elle était la seule à répondre à ce critère. Sur le monument érigé pour marquer son inauguration, elle est appelée «route Transcanadienne», nom officiel qu'on lui a donné. Dans l'usage courant, c'est «la Transcanadienne» qui s'est imposé, l'adjectif devenant substantif spécifique, le nom propre de la route canadienne nº 1.

Un monument érigé à 1330 mètres d'altitude, au sommet du col Rogers, marque la place de l'inauguration de «la route Transcanadienne», le 3 septembre 1962, par le premier ministre John Diefenbaker en présence du ministre des Travaux publics, Davie Fulton, et des ministres responsables dans chacune des provinces. Au début, le gouvernement fédéral défrayait 10 % des travaux, puis a augmenté sa contribution de 40 %. C'est le fédéral qui a payé le tronçon de la route traversant les parcs nationaux du Canada Jasper, Banff, Yoho, des Glaciers et du Mont-Revelstoke. Le monument est constitué de deux arcs de bois s'entrecroisant, entourés d'un muret de pierres. Le grand arc représente la Confédération; le petit, le réseau routier transcanadien. Les trois murets symbolisent les trois océans qui bordent le Canada, l'Atlantique, le Pacifique et l'Arctique. Sur les murets se trouvent les armoiries des provinces et territoires du Canada.
