[The] TDG [Transportation of Dangerous Goods] Regulations requires dangerous goods safety marks to be displayed on a means of containment containing dangerous goods in transport. A dangerous goods safety mark can be a label, placard, orange panel, sign, mark, letter, word, number or abbreviation, or any combination of these things. Dangerous goods safety marks are displayed on a means of containment to identify dangerous goods and to show the nature of the danger they pose. [They] give a quick identification of dangerous goods in the event of an emergency situation such as a release of dangerous goods from a means of containment.

TDG stands for Transportation of Dangerous Goods. In Canada, the transportation of potentially hazardous materials is regulated under the federal Transportation of Dangerous Goods Act and Regulations which are administered by Transport Canada. The TDG Act and Regulations set out criteria for the classification of materials as dangerous goods and state how these materials must by packaged and shipped.

Some extra comments should be added with respect to waste dangerous goods. The TDG Regulations deal with three types of waste as dangerous goods. The first is those dangerous goods which have "served their purpose" and are now a waste, but retain sufficient danger that they are a dangerous good. These are referred to as waste dangerous goods and, in general, their shipping name is as it was before, with the word waste placed in front. Thus "nitric acid" becomes "waste nitric acid".

The TDG flammability classifications are : 2. 1-Flammable Gas, 3. 0-Flammable Liquid, 4. 1-Flammable Solid, 4. 2-Spontaneously Combustible, 4. 3-Reacts with Water to Generate a Flammable Gas.
