Record number: 1, Textual support number: 1 CONT
Unusually among stringed instruments, a kantele has no bridges or direct contact between string and soundboard, and though this makes it comparatively inefficient in terms of volume, it means that a high proportion of the sound reaches the ear direct from the strings, producing a distinct silvery ring. In Finland the basic form has five strings which are usually tuned to the first five notes of a diatonic scale, the same note range as most runo-song.... There are also new designs with more strings. 3, record 1, English, - kantele

The rate of an enzyme reaction (V) varies with the substrate concentration, increasing with an increased concentration until a maximum value (Vmax) is reached. 3, record 21, French, - concentration

The rate of a heterogenous enzymic reaction is attenuated by the relative slowness of the substrate diffusion to the enzyme. By analogy to the well established chemical action of inhibitors, this phenomenon can be referred to as "diffusional inhibition". In the chemical engineering literature the effect of diffusional limitations on the catalyst activity is quantitatively expressed by the effectiveness factor, [eta], which measures the departure of V from Vkin and is defined by the following relationship: V = [eta]Vkin. Thus, the magnitude of diffusional inhibition is conveniently expressed by the reciprocal of the effectiveness factor, which is a complex function of the kinetic parameters, transport coefficient, and substrate concentration. 3, record 22, English, - effectiveness%20factor

To achieve the maximum potential for a given flour, particularly in terms of loaf volume, it is usually necessary to add minute amounts of oxidizing agents(oxidants, improvers) to the essential ingredients. Such substances as potassium bromate, if added in appropriate amounts, can bring about desirable physical changes in the dough and thereby collectively produce an improvement in loaf volume and crumb grain. Heavy grain or light grain : charters rates are normally set at so much per tonne of grain transported. Obviously a ship of a given volume can be loaded with more tonnes of high-density "heavy" grains(wheat, corn, rye or soybeans) than with "low-density "light" grains(barley, oats, flaxseed or canola). Thus the type of grain hauled could determine the shipowners’ income for the charter. Charter terms state whether "heavy" grains or "light" grains are to be carried and set a rate for each. 4, record 58, French, - analyse%20des%20%C3%A9carts

"orbital theory" : The quantum theory of matter applied to the nature and behavior of the electron, either in single atoms(atomic orbital) or in united atoms(molecular orbital).... In simple language, the orbital theory considers the electron not as a particle, but as a three-dimensional wave that can exist at several energy levels; its exact location and position in the "shell"(which in most elements is a group of orbitals) cannot be precisely determined, but only predicted by the laws of mathematical probability. The orbital levels and the movement of electrons within them are expressed by wave functions and quantum numbers. The probability that an electron will be found in a given volume(i. e., the square of the one-electron wave function) is called the orbital of that electron, and the shape of the orbital is defined by surfaces of constant probability(i. e. spheres and doughnut-shaped ellipses). The electron orbital, described in terms of probability, is like a cloud, with indefinite boundaries. 2, record 77, English, - orbital

Hyper-Raman effect. The nature of this effect is most easily described in terms of the corpuscular picture of the Raman effect. With an intense laser source, the number of monochromatic photons impinging on the molecules of a medium per unit volume and unit time may be extremely large.... the selection rules for the vibrational and rotational transitions in the hyper-Raman effect are different... Thus certain transitions are observable in the hyper-Raman effect that are normally forbidden. This is one virtue of the hyper-Raman effect; the other is that it is observed in a spectral region whose frequency is far removed from that of the incoming radiation(and is, in fact, twice that of the latter). 1, record 80, English, - hyper%2DRaman%20effect

Despite the fact that in real terms the U. S. current account deficit has improved significantly and the Japanese and German trade surpluses have fallen, the continued deterioration in the U. S. nominal current account balance has been a source of disappointment and confusion to markets. To some extent, the lack of progress in nominal terms was expected, due to the so-called "J-curve" phenomenon, whereby the effect of a depreciation in the U. S. dollar worsens the U. S. terms of trade such that it initially offsets the improving net flow of goods and services in volume terms.

2, record 85, French, - param%C3%A8tre%20d%27ordre
