Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
  • Compartment - Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission
CONT

CNSC staff also stated that the radionuclide concentrations observed in the regular sampling of milk, sediment, soil, fish and terrestrial biota in the vicinity of the Darlington NGS are all at acceptable, very low levels.

  • Tiroir - Commission canadienne de sûreté nucléaire
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Ecosystems
CONT

Nowadays, PCBs have been detected in nearly all environmental compartments from our environment. One of these endangered compartments is the soil. Waste waters contain PCBs which are concentrated in the sewage sludge originating from water treatment plants.

CONT

Potential PCB distribution in the various environmental compartments can have the following ranges, depending on degree of chlorination : air, 0-34%; terrestrial soils, 33-52%; water, 0-1. 8%; suspended solids, 0. 05-0. 08%; aquatic biota, 0. 02-0. 03%; aquatic sediments, 30-50%.

CONT

Depending on environment conditions and sediment characteristics, sediment can constitute an environmental "compartment" where elements or chemical compounds introduced into the aquatic environment in dissolved or particulate form tend to collect and accumulate.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Air Pollution
CONT

In more remote sensitive areas many components of the terrestrial and aquatic eco-systems are at risk-trees, soils, lakes and biota(Figure 7). While pollution damage near sources, such as occurs around sulfidic ore smelting operations, is relatively easy to detect, and often provides striking examples of the impact of acid deposition, damage at greater distances from sources, such as the acidification of remote lakes and the loss of their fisheries, is often less obvious.
