Space microbiology studies may be divided into three major categories, each of which will be discussed in light of the current stage of knowledge in that field. The first involves analysis of samples collected outside the Earth's biosphere. The second includes the many studies in which pure cultures of terrestrial microorganisms were evaluated either during or after exposure to components of the spaceflight environment. The third category contains studies of the autoflora of crew members and the microbial load of recoverable spacecraft components which were performed to evaluate changes in populations of microorganisms.

To assess the impact of human activity on these ecosystems--and to protect the estimated 27 000 species of plants and animals that live in them--a team of 40 scientists from Environment Canada and the Quebec Ministry of the Environment have created an Internet atlas of the river's ecology and biology.... Known as the Biodiversity Portrait of the St. Lawrence River, the atlas covers the Quebec region of the river.... Users can take a virtual tour of the St. Lawrence by viewing maps, charts and text summaries that describe the region from several different standpoints, including ecological structure, biodiversity, human impacts, and priority conservation areas. The atlas's ecological mapping system divides the river into natural regions and riparian landscapes, and allows users to explore at an even closer range by incorporating a georeferenced grid that breaks each terrestrial region into 100 km2 parcels.

Without adequate forward planetary protection precautions, we risk contaminating other planetary bodies to the detriment of our science and possible future resources.

OBS

Planetary protection-including : understanding limits of reproduction for terrestrial extremophile bacteria under conditions relevant to a planetary environment(terrestrial xerophiles, psychrophiles, radiation resistant bacteria etc.) understanding and reducing forward and backward contamination under operational conditions relevant to a planetary environment.

OBS

The goal of Planetary Protection is to enable the exploration of planetary bodies in our solar system without introducing terrestrial contamination into those that may harbor life. The discipline includes both the protection of the object being studied (forward protection), as well as the protection of life on Earth from potential extraterrestrial contamination (backward protection).

... the study of the features of the planet Mars such as landforms, climates, weather patterns, relic zones conserving possible lifeforms or their fossils, and also the physical processes that create and modify these features, and the spatial patterns among them.

CONT

"Areography" entails the delineation and characterization of regions on Mars. Like terrestrial geography, "areography" would concern itself with the society and environment interaction on Mars, such as the location analytic process involved in selecting appropriate lander sites, the constraints and opportunities of human settlement of Mars, and the human imaginings, perceptions, and feelings about Mars. "Areography" would tend to be more interested in the surface of Mars, the zone of contact among its crust, cryosphere, and atmosphere, and, perhaps, one day, human society there, rather than the deep planetary structure and processes.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Astrophysique et cosmographie
  • Planètes
DEF

Étude descriptive de la planète Mars.

OBS
