mandate: Territories detached from the former Central Powers and put under a tutelary regime in accordance with Art. 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations.

[A] Mandate System [is] a system set up by Art. 22 of the Covenant of the League of Nations following World War I under which certain colonies and territories of the defeated powers "ceased to be under the sovereignty of the States which formerly governed them". These mandated territories were placed under the tutelage of mandatory States on behalf of, and making annual reports to, the League.

OBS

With the creation of the United Nations the mandates [or mandated territories] were converted into Trust Territories under the administration of the Trusteeship Council of the United Nations.

Le mandat C (...) s'appliquait à certains territoires (...) qui, en raison de la faible densité de la population, de leur superficie restreinte, de leur éloignement des centres de civilisation, de leur contiguïté géographique au territoire du mandataire, avaient semblé ne pouvoir être mieux administrés que sous les lois de la Puissance mandataire comme une partie intégrante de son territoire.

Régions visées: Samoa occidental, Nauru, Nouvelle-Guinée, îles Carolines,Mariannes et Marshall. Le mandat C a prit fin après la dissolution de la Société des Nations en 1945. Ce régime a été remplacé par le régime de la tutelle (accord de tutelle) qui ne subsiste que pour les îles du Pacifique (Marshall, Mariannes et Carolines).
