Subject field(s)
  • Biological Sciences
DEF

Procedure based on the formation of a diazo linkage between enzyme proteins and aryldiazonium electrophilic groups on the insoluble support. Supports containing aromatic amino groups are treated with sodium nitrite in acidic solutions and the resultant activated support reacts with aromatic residues such as the phenolic residue of L-tyrosine or the imidazole residue of L-histidine to give azo derivatives.

CONT

There are many commercial diazonium salts used as azo coupling reagents, which are usually in a stabilized form(a stable diazotate) produced by reaction with alkali(forming the free base) or with zinc chloride(forming a diazo double salt)... Diazonium ions are weak electrophiles; they react with highly reactive aromatic compounds-with phenols and tertiary aromatic amines-to yield azo compounds... Azo coupling of proteins can be effected by polymers containing aryldiazonium functional groups... Monomers containing aromatic nitro groups grafted onto polymers have been reduced, diazotized, and used to immobilize enzymes.

CONT

  • Analytical Chemistry
DEF

An anion-exchange agent that can exchange its anion with the anion or anions of a solution passed through it or that can absorb anions in the form of acids ...

OBS

The term anion-exchange resin is mostly used in the case of solid organic polymers.

OBS

There are two main categories of anion exchanger-the strong base exchangers and the weak base exchangers. A typical strong anion exchanger is prepared from the polymerization of styrene and divinylbenzene, followed by chloromethylation and treatment with an appropriate secondary or tertiary amine... The weak anion exchanges contain a mixture of primary secondary and tertiary amino groups. They are produced by condensing aliphatic amines with either epichlorohydrin or ethylene dichloride...

CONT

When a tree seed germinates, the first(primary) root grows down in the soil in response to gravity. Secondary roots then branch off horizontally, with subsequent branching into tertiary roots, etc. Absorption of water and mineral nutrients is the function of the very fine, non-woody roots(the feeder roots). With continued growth, each root will lose its ability for absorption. These larger woody roots then function as the transport system for water and nutrients from the new feeder roots to the stem. They are also the tree's system of anchorage and a food starage area. The resulting system thus consists of several main transport roots that extend radically and horizontally from the tree base and divide into ever smaller roots, each ending in a dense mass of fine feeder roots.
