DEF

... an engineer who is involved in most stages of oil and gas field evaluation, development, and production, whose job is to maximize hydrocarbon recovery and reduce costs and environmental impact.

CONT

Petroleum engineers develop and implement effective techniques for recovering, processing, and producing oil and natural gas. English

Subject field(s)
  • Oil Production
DEF

Now the generally accepted designation for all unconventional recovery processes which can be separated into three major categories, i.e. thermal processes, chemical processes and miscible displacement processes.

OBS

Processes developed to increase recovery from reservoirs considered depleted by secondary recovery methods of waterflooding or gas injection were termed "tertiary recovery"; but the name was illsuited for recovery from reservoirs which would not respond to secondary recovery methods; this prompted introduction of the term "enhanced oil recovery. "

OBS

enhanced oil recovery: term standardized by ISO.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Production pétrolière
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Economics
  • Production (Economics)
  • Various Industries
DEF

An industry that produces the raw materials employed in an economy.

OBS

Its products range from agricultural and fishing-industry products to products such as oil and gas, minerals, and pulp and paper, which have been subject to only a limited degree of processing. Their conversion into products ready for consumers or for goods used to produce consumer goods is the role of secondary industry or tertiary industry.

Subject field(s)
  • Oil and Natural Gas Extraction
DEF

A tertiary recovery technique. Steam, and in some cases fire, is introduced into a depleted well to encourage any trapped oil to migrate towards the well bore.

PHR

Thermal recovery process, project.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Extraction du pétrole et du gaz naturel
DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Petroleum Deposits
OBS

Oilfields, after a certain production period, are then called mature fields. Mature fields are those where the recovered oil fraction is close to the final recovery factor. Its mature phase is generally accompanied by an increasing production of water or gas, plus the aging of surface and subsurface equipment. To revitalize mature fields, a series of technologies is developed to increase the final recovery factor through treatments on a field(the so-called tertiary petroleum recovery) or well(stimulation, recompletion, treatments and logging) scale, in addition to optimizing the techniques relating to oil lift, its surface flow and treatment.

OBS

Many mature gas fields also have a fairly significant production decline, especially when development drilling has come to an end. These mature fields can be revitalized in many ways. In some instances, efforts are focused on the reservoir with further drilling to drain potentially unswept hydrocarbons with infill wells or horizontal laterals. The horizontal drilling might be from new wellbores or wells that are currently temporarily abandoned or near their economic limit. With the increase in horizontal-well activity, there is an abundance of new technology with advances in gravel-pack design, underbalanced drilling with coiled tubing, and coiled-tubing fracturing. Besides these production improvements, operators are revamping both downhole and surface facilities to help breathe new life into older fields. Advances are taking place in the areas of artificial lift, intelligent-well completions, expandable tubulars, and others.

OBS
