A cap for covering the heads of a group of piles, tying them together so that the structural load is evenly distributed and they act as a single unit.

Building loads are transferred to the heads of the piles through a structural element known as a pile cap. Although pile caps resemble spread footings and are often constructed in contact with the ground, it is not common practice to consider that they derive any direct support from the soil.

La structure de liaison, généralement en béton armé, est l'élément de fondation disposé entre l'ouvrage à porter et les pieux porteurs; elle a pour but de réduire la solution de continuité qui existe inévitablement entre ces deux structures distinctes [...] Une structure de liaison doit d'abord assurer une parfaite transmission aux pieux porteurs des charges provenant de la structure. Elle doit ensuite empêcher tout mouvement horizontal des têtes de pieux lors de l'application des charges et des surcharges. Complémentairement, la structure de liaison, si elle est suffisamment rigide, contribue à «homogénéiser» la répartition des charges sur les têtes de pieux, réduisant ainsi les tassements différentiels entre pieux voisins.
