Record 2 2007-01-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Orbital Stations
CONT

ENVISAT/ASAR may be calibrated using the ERS [European Remote Sensing Satellite] instrument. Two SAR [synthetic aperture radar] images of the same area are required and at least one strong point-like target must be visible in both scenes. The target response should originate from the same stable scatterer. For the technique a very coarse digital elevation model(DEM) of the scene is suitable. The method bases on the very well-known timing parameters and high orbit accuracy of the ERS instrument(5 cm radial and 15 cm along track orbit accuracy).

English

Subject field(s)
  • Titles of Federal Government Programs (Canadian)
  • Birds
OBS

All seabirds in the northwest Atlantic Ocean migrate, but timing and routes are not well understood. We evaluate existing knowledge on seabird migration with data from the Programme intégré de recherches sur les oiseaux pélagiques(PIROP) data base, using observations of immature and moulting seabirds to track migration of the following species : Northern Fulmar(Fulmarus glacialis), Greater Shearwater(Puffinus gravis), Northern Gannet(Morus bassanus), Herring Gull(Larus argentatus), Iceland Gull(Larus glaucoides), Glaucous Gull(Larus hyperboreus), Great Black-backed Gull(Larus marinus), Black-legged Kittiwake(Rissa tridactyla), and Thick-billed Murre(Uria lomvia).

Record 5 2001-08-03

English

Subject field(s)
  • Stock Exchange
  • Investment
CONT

Passive management means investing in securities that replicate the performance of a specific market index. Passive management rests on the principle that markets are efficient, and security selection and asset mix timing strategies cannot consistently beat market indices. This management style involves lower investment fees, few surprises in terms of relative performance and simplified monitoring.

OBS

[Indexed management] differs from active investment management in that the investment decisions do not rely on investment managers, strategies, stock selection or market timing. Instead, the portfolio seeks to emulate-or track-either a market index, or a specifically designed index. Indexed management is also called passive fund management or index tracking fund management.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Bourse
  • Investissements et placements
DEF
