CONT

Tokamak... is an acronym created from the Russian words, "TOroidalnaya KAmera ee MAgnitnaya Katushka, "or "Toroidal Chamber and Magnetic Coil, "and denotes a class of systems for the toroidal magnetic confinement of thermonuclear fusion plasmas. Originally designed by Andrei Sakharov(1921-1989) and developed in the USSR, the tokamak began setting performance records for magnetic confinement fusion systems in the late 1960s and remains the leading concept for magnetic confinement fusion today. The tokamak configuration is perhaps most easily visualized by considering a cylindrical vacuum tube(typically of D or O-shaped cross section) which has been bent around a symmetry axis into a torus.

Subject field(s)
  • Atomic Physics
DEF

A device for confining a plasma within a toroidal chamber, which produces plasma temperatures, densities, and confinement times greater than that of any other such device; confinement is effected by a very strong externally applied toroidal field, plus a weaker poloidal field produced by a toroidally directed plasma current, and this current causes ohmic heating of the plasma.

tokamak: term standardized by ISO.

DEF

Subject field(s)
  • Diesel Motors
  • Engines (Motor Vehicles)
CONT

In an indirect injection diesel engine, fuel is injected into a small prechamber which is connected to the cylinder by a narrow opening. The initial combustion takes place in this prechamber. This has the effect of slowing the rate of combustion, which tends to reduce audible noise. In a direct injection diesel engine, fuel is injected directly into the cylinder. The piston incorporates a depression(often toroidal) which is where initial combustion takes place. Direct injection diesel engines are generally more efficient than indirect injection engines, but have a tendency to produce greater amounts of audible noise. In either case the location where combustion takes place, called a swirl chamber, is carefully designed to ensure adequate mixing of the atomized fuel with the compression-heated air.

  • Moteurs diesel
  • Moteur (Véhicules automobiles)
CONT

Le fonctionnement du moteur Diesel à injection directe est entièrement basé sur l'auto-allumage du combustible dans l'air fortement chauffé par la compression.
