Total amount of ozone found in the various layers of the atmosphere.

CONT

Satellites are electronic devices placed into orbit to monitor and examine regions which we can not observe from earth. These are used routinely to monitor atmospheric ozone, ultraviolet radiation, and many other constituents. Satellite altimetry and radar interferometry are used to measure magnetic field intensity and track Antarctic ice flow.

Ce sont d'abord l'observation régulière de l'ozone atmosphérique par sa quantité totale et sa distribution verticale à l'Institut Royal de Météorologie de Belgique.

Bien que la plus grande partie de l'ozone atmosphérique soit concentrée dans la stratosphère, on en trouve aussi dans la troposphère et dans la mésosphère.

While the total amount of ozone in the troposphere is small compared with stratospheric ozone, it is important in considering the energy balance of the atmosphere. At the lower levels of the atmosphere, ozone is at higher pressures and its absorption of outgoing infrared radiation is very much more effective than higher-level ozone.

About 90% of the total ozone is found in the stratosphere.

... the TIROS Operational Vertical Sounder(TOVS)... consists of three instruments : the High-Resolution Infrared Sounder-2(HIRS-2), the Microwave Sounding Unit(MSU), and the Stratospheric Sounding Unit(SSU). These instruments provide global information about the structure of the atmosphere, including vertical temperature and moisture profiles and fractional cloud cover. Using a completely physical-based method for analysis of the HIRS-2 and MSU radiance data, additional information can be derived, including surface skin temperature, total vertically integrated ozone amount, outgoing longwave radiation, and precipitation estimates.
