Subject field(s)

  • Analytical Chemistry
OBS

A type of ionization detector that responds to the permanent gases. It consists of a small ionization chamber in which the carrier gas and solute are irradiated with electron from a β-ray emitter while a potential is applied across the cell. When solutes enter the chamber there is a current change arising from the change in total cross-section for ionization.

OBS

The carrier gas most commonly used is hydrogen but nitrogen and helium are also employed.

CONT

Transport correction. Much of the error due to the diffusion approximation comes from the assumption of isotopic scattering.(This assumption is necessary to reach the simple form of the integral transport [and] was also made to establish Fick's law when we assume that when a neutron leaving dV had probability d2 omega/4[ pi] of hitting dS where d2 omega was the solid angle under which dS is seen from the point of emission). The transport correction established from the differential form of the transport operator can compensate for most of this error. Because it is simple to introduce, it is always used in practice. It consists of replacing the total cross-section [sigma] with the so-called “transport” cross-section in the expression for the diffusion of the coefficient.

CONT

English

Subject field(s)
  • Weather Stations and Meteorological Instruments and Equipment
CONT

Totalizer or storage gauges are used to measure total precipitation for periods from one month to one year in remote, sparsely inhabited areas. A collector area of 300 cm [square] is acceptable for a totalizer gauge but collectors of 500 cm(square] area give better results. The capacity of the receiver is chosen according to the amount of precipitation and the frequency of observations. The receiver usually has a cross-section several times that of the orifice.

CONT

U-VALUE. The overall heat transfer coefficient or thermal conductance of a building wall, floor, ceiling, roof, or other element; of piping or tubing carrying heating or cooling fluids; or of heat transfer equipment. The total heat transfer can be estimated as the product of U, surface area, temperature difference, and time.

Calculations for cut and fill are often worked out by means of the... contour-planes method. A strict examination of existing grade and proposed grade for a project will indicate the specific cut or fill requirements of a given area of earthwork. Horizontal cross-section volumes are then calculated for each contour interval indicated on the plan. When taken together, these form the total cut or fill volume necessary for the design area.
