TOTAL DIGESTIBLE NUTRIENTS [5 records]

Record 1 2022-08-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Forage Crops
CONT

[Wheat] hay harvested at the dough stage would have 56-62 percent TDN [total digestible nutrients] and 8-10 percent crude protein, on a dry matter basis. So, wheat hay has almost as high an energy content as alfalfa hay, but significantly lower protein.

As background to the subject of how MIG [management intensive grazing] can help to stabilize herbage quality, recognize first that the nutritional value of pasture herbage reflects not simply nutrient content and digestibility, measured through such indices as crude protein content(CP) or fractions thereof, acid and neutral detergent fiber(ADF and NDF, respectively), total digestible nutrients(TDN), in vitro dry matter digestibility(IVDMD), and the balance among key micronutrients, but also intake, which would be affected by both preference and accessibility within the standing sward profile.

CONT

An average pastoral unit requires about 10 breeding cows, a breeding male and associated stock for subsistence needs(Brumby, 1987). These animals may use about 100 ha of rangeland providing approximately 10 500 kg of total digestible nutrients(TDN) per annum, which is far below needs.

The total digestible nutrients include all the organic nutrients-protein, fiber, nitrogen-free extract, and fat(the latter being multiplied by 2. 25, because its energy value for animals is approximately 2. 25 times that of protein or carbohydrates). The abbreviation T. D. N. is often used for total digestible nutrients.

The main energy feeds used in Florida are corn and by-products from the citrus industry. Corn, the standard used for evaluating energy feeds, is grown in limited amounts, causing most feeders to depend upon out-of-state sources for shelled corn and ground snapped corn. By products of the citrus industry are citrus pulp, citrus molasses and a limited amount of citrus meal, with citrus pulp being the most important. Large quantities of citrus pulp are available each year for beef cattle feeding, and on a laboratory analysis basis, it compares favorably with ground snapped corn with respect to TDN(total digestible nutrients).
