TOTAL ECLIPSE MOON [6 records]

Record 1 2024-04-05

English

Subject field(s)
  • The Sun (Astronomy)
DEF

[The] outermost region of the Sun’s atmosphere ...

OBS

It has a temperature of approximately two million kelvins and an extremely low density. The corona continually varies in size and shape as it is affected by the Sun's magnetic field.... The corona shines only about half as brightly as the Moon and is normally not visible to the unaided eye, because its light is overwhelmed by the brilliance of the solar surface. During a total solar eclipse, however, the Moon blocks out the light from the photosphere, permitting naked-eye observations of the corona.

CONT

A total solar eclipse happens when the Moon passes between the Sun and Earth, completely blocking the face of the Sun. People viewing the eclipse from locations where the Moon's shadow completely covers the Sun – known as the path of totality – will experience a total solar eclipse. The sky will become dark, as if it were dawn or dusk. Weather permitting, people along the path of totality will see the Sun's corona, or outer atmosphere, which is usually obscured by the bright face of the Sun.

CONT

During a total lunar eclipse, the Sun, Earth and Moon form a straight line. The Earth blocks any direct sunlight from reaching the Moon. The Sun is behind the Earth, so the Sun's light casts the Earth's shadow on the Moon. This shadow covers the entire Moon and causes a total lunar eclipse.

CONT

Solar eclipses occur when the Moon passes between the Sun and the Earth, causing the Moon to cast a shadow on a portion of the Earth's surface.... during a total solar eclipse, the Moon aligns perfectly with the Sun and covers the entire solar disk, resulting in a momentary darkening of the sky. As a result, the corona becomes visible as a halo of glowing plasma encircling the Moon.

CONT

OBS

[The corona's] feeble light, which averages only half as bright as the light of the full moon, is generally lost in the glare of the sky around the uneclipsed sun.(...) The outer corona is characterized by delicate streamers which may extend more than the two million kilometers from the edge of the sun and which contribute to the beauty of the total solar eclipse.

OBS
