Fish populations naturally vary from year to year due to a number of factors including interspecies interactions and changes in the environment, as well as human fishing pressure... Thus to get the maximum sustainable yield from a fishery, it may be necessary to alter the total allowable catch each year to incorporate these fluctuations in population size... The current annual yield(CAY) is calculated yearly[, ] and it incorporates these fluctuations by applying a fixed reference level of fish mortality to the current fishable biomass... 3, record 1, English, - current%20annual%20yield

Viruses, most of which infect microorganisms, are the most abundant biological entities on the planet. Identifying and measuring the community dynamics of viruses in the environment is complicated because less than one percent of microbial hosts have been cultivated. Also, there is no single gene that is common to all viral genomes, so total uncultured viral diversity cannot be monitored using approaches analogous to ribosomal DNA profiling. Metagenomic analyses of uncultured viral communities circumvent these limitations and can provide insights into the composition and structure of environmental viral communities. 2, record 13, English, - viral%20metagenomics

3, record 13, French, - m%C3%A9tag%C3%A9nomique%20des%20virus

An omnidirectional microphone is one that is designed to be equally sensitive to sounds coming from all directions. The pickup pattern of an "omni" mike is thus described as circular. Actually, it's spherical. These mikes work well for picking up a single sound sporce in another wise quiet environment, or for picking the total sound from several sources, if there is no need to have separate control over the volume of any individual source.... omnidirectional microphones are best used when it's desirable to pick up all the sounds in a given environment. 3, record 22, English, - omni%2Ddirectional%20microphone

The Space Shuttle system consists of four primary elements : an orbiter spacecraft, two Solid Rocket Boosters(SRB), an external tank to house fuel and oxidizer and three Space Shuttle main engines.... The Shuttle will transport cargo into near Earth orbit 100 to 217 nautical miles(115 to 250 statute miles) above the Earth. This cargo or payload is carried in a bay 15 feet in diameter and 60 ft long. Major system requirements are that the orbiter and the two solid rocket boosters be reusable.... The orbiter has carried a flight crew of up to eight persons. A total of 10 persons could be carried under emergency conditions. The basic mission is 7 days in space. The crew compartment has a shirtsleeve environment, and the acceleration load is never greater than 3 Gs. In its return to Earth, the orbiter has a cross-range maneuvering capability of 1, 100 nautical miles(1, 265 statute miles). The Space Shuttle is launched in an upright position, with thrust provided by the three Space Shuttle engines and the two SRB. After about 2 minutes, the two boosters are spent and are separated from the external tank. They fall into the ocean at predetermined points and are recovered for reuse. 4, record 23, English, - space%20shuttle

7, record 24, French, - sensibilit%C3%A9%20chimique%20multiple

In a "shirt sleeve" environment one must utilize a breathing mixture which is fire safe and provides hypoxia and DCS [Decompression Sickness] protection. Argon is an inert gas with properties similar to nitrogen. It is relatively inexpensive and available. In terms of fire protection, a 38% oxygen and 62% argon mixture at 7.34 psia will provide an equivalent burn rate of paper strips as sea level air. In terms of hypoxia prevention, this mixture, at this pressure, is the equivalent of breathing air at an altitude of 2,728 feet. 3, record 36, English, - in%20shirt%2Dsleeve%20environment

The calculations for the ISS [International Space Station] quasi-steady acceleration environment can be compared to a set of formal design requirements which state that 50 percent of the ISPR [International Standard Payload Rack] locations within the U. S. Lab, Columbus and the JEM must have quasi-steady accelerations below 1 ug for periods of 30 continuous days a total of 6 times per year. The operation of the Station in Microgravity Mode is designed to produce these 30 day intervals. The quasi-steady acceleration vector has an additional directional stability requirement stating that the component perpendicular to the vector's orbital average must be less than or equal to 0. 2 [mu] g. To meet this requirement the Station's attitude must be controlled during orbit so that it maintains a constant position relative to the LVLH [Local Vertical/Local Horizontal] axes. 2, record 37, English, - quasi%2Dsteady%20acceleration%20environment
Record number: 37, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The quasi-steady state acceleration level is determined primarily by the combined effects of atmospheric drag (due to the finite residual Earth’s atmosphere at the orbital altitude of the ISS), and gravity gradient stabilisation of the ISS. Gravity gradient stabilisation uses the principle that a body in orbit around the Earth will tend to rotate about it’s centre of mass, as each part of the body will tend to follow it’s own orbit. It will normally oscillate about a mean orientation, but will eventually remain in a stable orientation with respect to the Earth. The normal orientation for the ISS is the Torque Equilibrium Attitude discussed earlier. The resultant combination of atmospheric drag, gravity gradient and other secondary effects produce a set of gravity contours (i.e., locations of equal gravity level) which define the quasi-steady state microgravity environment of the ISS. 3, record 37, English, - quasi%2Dsteady%20acceleration%20environment

Road Call Counts(administered by the Canadian Wildlife Service, Environment Canada) are especially suitable for volunteers who would like to participate in an amphibian survey, but don’t live in a rural area with frogs and toads calling near their home. Survey routes comprising 10 stops located 0. 8 km apart, for a total of 7. 2 km are selected along quiet two-lane roads where listening will not be affected by traffic, aircraft, factory or machinery noise. Volunteers are asked to listen at each stop for three minutes and to estimate the density of each amphibian species calling. Instrument proposed by John Dales and based on the principle that, since environment policy cannot be grounded on equalizing the marginal social cost of pollution with the marginal social benefit of abating pollution(theses functions being almost impossible to ascertain), standards of environmental quality are decided on by the government authorities. A quality standard can be defined with reference to the degree of accepted pollution corresponding to a given quantity of pollutant discharged per unit of time(for example, one year). One can then imagine this annual total quantity of pollutant being represented by bonds which would really be pollution rights. The bonds could be put on sale by the public sector in an actual market for pollution rights. These rights would be negotiable and sold at prices determined by supply and demand. 1, record 53, English, - auction%20of%20pollution%20rights

An approach to obtaining an estimate of operational reliability. In principal, if all sets of input data values upon which the computer program must operate are identified, an estimate of the reliability of the program could be obtained by running the program for all such possible sets. In practice a methodology is used to select sample data sets from the total of such sets which are representative of intended operational usage and the program is run for those sets only. Lakes, rivers, and watersheds are the ultimate "collectors" of atmospheric pollution. Thus, one research approach has been to operate lakes and watersheds as large-scale, "calibrated" collectors, since the surface environment experiences a total loading, due to a combination of all deposition processes. This approach has led to establishing calibrated watersheds as monitoring sites which are combinations of streams, lakes, and plant communities under intensive measurement. In these watersheds, hydrologic weirs are set up in stream entering and leaving small study lakes, or settling pools. 1, record 61, English, - calibrated%20watershed

4, record 61, French, - bassin%20jaug%C3%A9
