What clinicians loosely refer to as a "bone graft" for reconstruction of the atrophic maxilla really amounts to a marrow transplant. It is aimed at obtaining osteocompetent cells, which are essentially the endosteal osteoblasts from the surface of cancellous bone trabeculae and the cancellous marrow stem-cell population from bone donor sites such as the ilium and tibial plateau. The graft itself contains these osteocompetent cells and islands of mineralized cancellous bone, fibrin from blood clotting, and platelets within the clot. 1, record 9, English, - osteocomptent%20cell

The appearance seen in fibrous dysplasia in which relatively radiolucent or radiopaque areas appreciated on roentgenograms reflect the relative amounts of fibrous and osseous tissue. Trabeculae of woven bone are haphazardly embedded within a largely fibrous collagenous matrix and contribute to the overall generalized haziness of the lesion. Conversely, predominantly fibrous zones appear more radiolucent. [From REBON, 1988, p. 4069. ] 3, record 17, English, - ground%20glass%20appearance
