Instrumental neutron activation analysis(INAA) is used to determine the concentration of trace and major elements in a variety of matrices. A sample is subjected to a neutron flux and radioactive nuclides are produced. As these radioactive nuclides decay, they emit gamma rays whose energies are characteristic for each nuclide. Comparison of the intensity of these gamma rays with those emitted by a standard permit a quantitative measure of the concentrations of the various nuclides. 2, record 7, English, - instrumental%20neutron%20activation%20analysis

Quadrupole ICP-MS [inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry] is currently the method of choice for laser-ablation applications since sector-field instruments are generally considered too slow for the acquisition of rapidly varying signals. However, the new generation of double-focusing sector-field mass spectrometers is capable of rapidly scanning the mass spectrum both magnetically and electrostatically, and the combination of these two scan modes approaches the performance of quadrupoles for most practical applications. ... Biomass burning has only recently been recognized as a major source of important trace gases and aerosol particles. Through burning, the chemical elements in vegetation are cycled back to the atmosphere and to soils in chemical and physical forms and proportions which make biomass burning an important biogeochemical process. Before the advent of humans, fire was ignited naturally by lightning strikes in dry vegetated regions. Today, however, the process is driven almost exclusively by human activity which includes the burning of forested areas to facilitate land clearing, the burning of harvest debris to maintain cleared land, the extensive burning of natural grasslands and savannas to sustain nomadic agriculture, and the burning of biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. The importance of biomass burning is well recognized in International Global Atmospheric Chemistry and this activity, Biomass Burning Experiment : Impact on the Atmosphere and Biosphere(BIBEX), was established to address this phenomenon. It is being carried out by a multi-national science team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany. 3, record 14, English, - Biomass%20Burning%20Experiment%3A%20Impact%20on%20the%20Atmosphere%20and%20Biosphere

The quantitative aspects of elemental electrospray mass spectrometry are investigated with particular emphasis on the factors affecting the ability to establish linear calibration curves. It is shown that linear calibration curves can be obtained for trace elements if the analyte signal is ratioed to the signal from a constant amount of a similarly charged electrolyte species. Linear calibration curves can be established over a concentration dynamic range of at least 4 orders of magnitude. The added component seems to function as a stabilizer and monitor of the electrospray process and as an internal standard. In certain cases species generated by acidification of the solvent may be used as electrospray stabilizers. 3, record 15, English, - electrospray

Indiana University Laboratory for Spectrochemistry. Plasma Source Mass Spectrometry. "Single-Crystal Scintillator-Based Array Detector for Sector-Field Mass Spectrometry," [by] David A. Solyom. Beginning with the use of photographic plates in the first quarter of this century, array detectors have had a long history of usage in mass-spectrometric analysis. Array detectors are position-sensitive devices capable of independently measuring ion signals that are incident at different locations on the detector’s face. Currently popular among the different types of array detectors available for mass spectrometry are microchannel-plate(s) (MCP) coupled with a phosphor .... The electrons emitted from the rear of the MCP strike the phosphor being held in close proximity (1mm) to the MCP. The phosphor screen is sensitive to the incident electrons and will emit photons in response. The number of emitted photons is proportional to the number of incident electrons and the location on the phosphor from which the photons are emitted coincides with the location of the incident electrons. The photons from the phosphor can then be converted into a proportional electronic signal by an imaging device such as a CCD or CID detector array. 2, record 24, English, - sector%20field%20mass%20spectrometry

Photon excitation : X-ray emission induced by the impact of charged particles other than electrons, for example alpha particles, was discovered by Chadwick in 1912. High energy(1. 5 MeV) photons are associated with large cross-sections for ionization and very low backgrounds, two ideal conditions for very low detection limits that effectively reach 10[ upperscript-11]-10[ upperscript-12](g) for elements with Z > 15. On account of this high absolute sensitivity, photon excitation is used with Si(Li) detectors in many applications dealing with the simultaneous determination of trace elements in water, serum, blood and tissues. 1, record 26, English, - photon%20excitation

In the last 10-15 years many analytical advances in X-ray fluorescence analysis(XRF) have taken place, giving rise to non-destructive ultrasensitive surface analyses of materials. One of the variants of XRF developed is micro-XRF(5-XRF), which is able to analyse the distribution of major, minor and trace elements in microscopic sample surface areas. Due to the availability of commercial instrumentation and the development of simple devices for focusing X-rays, 5-XRF has increased in popularity and is able to fill the gap between bulk X-ray fluorescence and electron probe X-ray microanalysis(EPXMA). 1, record 27, English, - microscopic%20x%2Dray%20fluorescence

An acronym for a basaltic lunar rock type first found in Apollo 12 fines and breccias and characterized by unusually high contents of potassium(K), rare-earth elements(REE), phosphorus(P), and other trace elements in comparison to other lunar rock types. The material, which is found in a variety of crystalline and glassy(shock-melted?) rock types, is distinctly different from the iron-rich mare basalts. The term "nonmare basalt" is equivalent. 2, record 40, English, - KREEP

1, record 40, French, - Kr%C3%AEp
