The trace element iron has been recently shown to play a critical role in nutrient utilization, phytoplankton growth and therefore the uptake of carbon dioxide from the surface waters of the global ocean. Carbon fixation in the surface waters, via phytoplankton growth, shifts the ocean/atmosphere exchange equilibrium for carbon dioxide. As a result, levels of atmospheric carbon dioxide(a greenhouse gas) and iron flux to the oceans have been linked to climate change(glacial to interglacial transitions). These recent findings have led some to suggest that large scale iron fertilization of the world's oceans may therefore be a feasible strategy for controlling climate. 2, record 5, English, - iron%20fertilization

2, record 5, French, - fertilisation%20par%20le%20fer

In 1956, Harley and Pretorius described a simple discharge detector for gas chromatography based on the electrical properties of a glow discharge, the voltage across the gaseous discharge being a function of the type of gas present. Druyvesteyn and Penning in 1940 reviewed the complex nature of the glow discharge, noting that the discharge is maintained by electrons emitted from the cathode which result from processes related to positive ion bombardment, photoelectric emission, and collisions with excited atoms. When trace quantities of a material eluted from a chromatographic column enter the detector(consisting of a small platinum disk cathode and a tungsten wire anode), a voltage change resulted which was recorded. 2, record 8, English, - glow%20discharge%20detector

More recently, Wilhite described glow discharge-type devices which act electrically similar to a gas-filled voltage-regulator tube ... 2, record 12, French, - radiatif

TAGA. The Trace Atmospheric Gas Analyser was developed at the University of Toronto and SCIEX Ltd. The device uses a quadrapole mass spectrometer in continuous operational mode. System sensitivity is high(ppt levels), selectivity for various pollutants is good, and can be used in a mobile environment. EPS is evaluating the device for a monitoring role. The system is quite expensive(well over $100, 000) and requires a high level of expertise to operate. Because of its price it will probably be limited to use by organizations conducting large atmospheric surveys. 1, record 13, English, - trace%20atmospheric%20gas%20analyser
