TRACE MINERAL [7 records]

Record 1 2024-10-30

English

Subject field(s)
  • Nutritive Elements (Biological Sciences)
  • Dietetics
CONT

The body requires a number of minerals in order to maintain its proper functioning. The minerals are used for a variety of physiological processes such as building blood and bone, making hormones, regulating heartbeat, and more. There are two types of minerals. Macrominerals are needed in large amounts. Trace minerals are needed in very small amounts. The macrominerals are calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, sodium, potassium, chloride, and sulfur. The trace minerals are iron, manganese, copper, iodine, zinc, cobalt, fluoride, and selenium.

OBS

... microminerals are needed in amounts lower than 100 mg [milligrams]/day ...

DEF

A radioactive mineral consisting of thorium silicate.

CONT

The radioactivity of thorite often brings it to a state of metamiction, in which its crystal structure becomes unstable thereby causing the crystal edges to become smooth and rounded. When this happens, the thorite may gain hydroxyl (OH) molecules in place of the silica (SiO4) molecules and transform into a different mineral, thorogummite.

OBS

Thorite is currently an important ore of uranium. A variety of thorite often called "uranothorite" is particularly rich in uranium... Other varieties of thorite include "orangite, "an orange variety; "calciothorite" an impure variety with trace amounts of calcium and "freyalite" actually a discredited variety containing cerium([which] turned out to be an altered form of the mineral melanocerite).

Model 1 starts with an average modified Bell Island leucotonalite melt coexisting with two pyroxenes, two Fe-Ti oxides, and plagioclase at the beginning of hydration crystallization.

OBS

According to mineral and chemical compositions two types of basic granulites are recognized : leucocratic, close in contents of major and trace elements to low-titanium tholeiitic basalts, and melanocratic, depleted in SiO2, Na2O, Rb, Ba, Sr, and LREE and enriched in Fe2O3, Ti, Nb, HREE, Y, and Sc(compared with the leucocratic granulites) and compositionally similar to restite equilibrated with tonalite melt.

McClain and Gatlin... conducted two experiments to determine the zinc requirements of fingerling blue tilapia. Based on scale and bone zinc concentrations, 20 ppm zinc in the diet was the requirement to prevent zinc deficiency. Additional research is needed to expand our understanding of the trace mineral nutrition of cultured fish.

OBS

There are seven trace minerals that have been shown to be needed in supplementing animal diets. They are iron, copper, zinc, manganese, cobalt, iodine and selenium. They are needed in very small amounts, or traces, in the diet, and hence their name "trace minerals."
