Record 1 2024-05-09

English

Subject field(s)
  • Artificial Intelligence
DEF

The determination of a sequence of operations or actions that may lead to a desired goal.

CONT

Successful problem solving depends upon knowing the initial state, and knowing what an acceptable outcome would be, and knowing the elements or operators that define the problem space. If the elements or operators are very large in number or if they are poorly defined, one is faces with a huge or unbounded problem space and an exhaustive search can become impossible.

CONT

Problem-solving process comprises three components: simulation of the environment in which the problem is being solved, solution planning, and fulfilment of the plan.

CONT

The interface is designed so that the student must solve each problem by selecting, labeling, and linking simple relational schemas, thus creating an explicit graphic reification illustrating the problem-solving process in detail...... this style of interface... creates an extremely detailed trace of the problem-solving process...

Diverse aerobic bacteria oxidize the three most abundant reduced trace gases in the atmosphere, namely hydrogen(H2), carbon monoxide(CO) and methane(CH4). This review describes the taxonomic distribution, physiological role and biochemical basis of microbial oxidation of these atmospheric trace gases, as well as the ecological, environmental, medical and astrobiological importance of this process.

CONT

OBS

Biomass burning has only recently been recognized as a major source of important trace gases and aerosol particles. Through burning, the chemical elements in vegetation are cycled back to the atmosphere and to soils in chemical and physical forms and proportions which make biomass burning an important biogeochemical process. Before the advent of humans, fire was ignited naturally by lightning strikes in dry vegetated regions. Today, however, the process is driven almost exclusively by human activity which includes the burning of forested areas to facilitate land clearing, the burning of harvest debris to maintain cleared land, the extensive burning of natural grasslands and savannas to sustain nomadic agriculture, and the burning of biomass as fuel for cooking and heating. The importance of biomass burning is well recognized in International Global Atmospheric Chemistry and this activity, Biomass Burning Experiment : Impact on the Atmosphere and Biosphere(BIBEX), was established to address this phenomenon. It is being carried out by a multi-national science team at the Max Planck Institute for Chemistry, Germany.

The quantitative aspects of elemental electrospray mass spectrometry are investigated with particular emphasis on the factors affecting the ability to establish linear calibration curves. It is shown that linear calibration curves can be obtained for trace elements if the analyte signal is ratioed to the signal from a constant amount of a similarly charged electrolyte species. Linear calibration curves can be established over a concentration dynamic range of at least 4 orders of magnitude. The added component seems to function as a stabilizer and monitor of the electrospray process and as an internal standard. In certain cases species generated by acidification of the solvent may be used as electrospray stabilizers.

"Carbon dioxide has been used for years to extend the shelf life of dairy products such as cottage cheese when trace amounts are sparged into product. Praxair's recent testing with its dense-phase CO2 system is producing consistent results including the finding that with the dense-phase CO2 process, the number of spoilage microorganisms is greatly reduced allowing for extended shelf life without subjecting product to detrimental levels of heat in thermal pasteurization.

Lindsey will trace a quarter-circle around the station, bringing the shuttle to a point a little more than 300 feet in front of the Destiny laboratory and Pressurized Mating Adapter 2. From that point, Lindsey will move Atlantis toward the station at a speed of one tenth of a mile per hour until the two vehicles are just 30 feet apart; there he will pause for a few minutes to check his alignment. Lindsey will gently close the distance until the shuttle's spring-loaded docking mechanism makes contact with the station. The mechanism will be retracted and latches commanded to close, completing the docking process.

DEF

A record of the execution of all or part of a program, showing the sequence of instructions or statements executed, the operands involved and their names, and the results.

CONT

This idea of a computer program giving a "trace" of its own performance is not quite as straightforward as it may seem. On most computer systems there is a way of running any program under a "trace option," which typically gives a list of the procedures entered, in order, and of the values of variables. This trace is supposed to help the programmer understand why his program has run amok, assuming it has.

The most computationally complex and most realistic algorithms for dealing with both reflection and refraction are called ray-tracing algorithms. In essence they trace individual light rays to determine which of them end up at the viewpoint and how they got there. In order to avoid having to deal with an infinity of lines emanating from a point source, the process works backward, starting at each pixel. Each ray starting at the viewpoint and passing through a pixel is projected backward until it hits a surface. The backward tracing of the reflected ray then continues to determine whether it could have come from a light source or from reflection from another object.
