Dimensionless number which like its reciprocal, the Bodenstein number, characterises the degree of dispersion, being zero for plug-flow and infinity for perfect mixing. It may be calculated experimentally from tracer studies. As real reactors inevitably exhibit a certain degree of back-mixing(dispersion), it is important to determine both its extent and its effect upon reactor performance.

The smaller the dispersion number, the less severe the backmixing. It is apparent that increasing linear velocity or bed depth will decrease the dispersion number and thus the backmixing. At higher conversion levels, the effect of backmixing on reactor performance is more severe than at lower conversions. The dispersion number can be written in terms of the Peclet number.

Le réacteur se présente sous forme d'une colonne garnie par un lit fixe d'enzymes immobilisées. On peut l'alimenter soit à flux descendant, soit à flux ascendant. Dans le cas idéal, toutes les molécules traversent le réacteur à la même vitesse et y séjournent donc pendant le même temps. On dit alors que l'on a un écoulement piston. Dans la réalité, il y a un certain échange de matière par diffusion, ce qui se traduit par l'apparition d'une distribution des temps de séjour (DTS). Cette DTS est caractérisée par le critère de PECLET : (...) Pour un écoulement piston, P est infini (D = 0). Pour un réacteur parfaitement homogène P = 0 (D = [infini]). Le réacteur à lit fixe réel a un comportement intermédiaire entre ces deux cas extrêmes : P diminue d'autant plus que les phénomènes de diffusion sont importants et la courbe de DTS devient de plus en plus large.
