When deciding the length to be provided, consideration should be given to providing an area long enough to contain overruns and undershoots resulting from a reasonably probable continuation of adverse operational factors on a precision approach runway, the ILS localizer is normally the first upstanding obstacle and the runway end safety area should extend up to this facility.

CONT

When the track bar is used in conjunction with a VOR [VHF omnidirectional radio range], a lean out of 10° to one or the other side from the signal causes a full deflection of the indicator. If the same pointer is used as an indicator of the ILS localizer, a full deflection will be induced by a 2, 5° diversion from the center of the localizer's beam.

DEF

The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

These smart uniforms might also eventually possess micro-climate subsystems to keep the soldier warm in the cold, and cool in a hot environment. They could also have an embedded "physiological status monitoring system, "to keep track of the soldier's physical health. The data could be transmitted to medics or unit commanders, to watch out for dehydration and other potentially serious medical conditions.

DEF

An imaginary curved line created on the ground by a series of connected subsatellite points.

OBS

The inclination of a satellite, together with its orbital altitude and the period of its orbit, creates a track defined by an imaginary line connecting the satellite and the Earth's center. The intersection on the line with the Earth's surface is the subsatellite point. As the Earth turns on its axis and the satellite orbits overhead, a line is created by the satellite's apparent path over the ground(the series of subsatellite points connected). A geostationary satellite has an inclination of essentially zero, and, because its orbital period exactly matches the Earth's rotation, its ground track is reduced to an apparent stationary point on the equator.

Center-bearing swing bridge. While swinging, this type of swing bridge is carried entirely on the center pivot; the trailing or balance wheels, which rol1 on a track near the outer edge of the pier, are adjusted with a little clearance so that their only function is to insure lateral stability. When the bridge is closed, the ends are lifted and on the pivot pier independent supports are inserted without lifting so as to carry the live load only. The center supports and end lifts should work simultaneously and be so adjusted that, when the center supports just come to a bearing(with no reaction from the dead load), the ends are lifted to their proper level.
