Subject field(s)
  • Flight Instruments and Equipment (Aeroindustry)
  • Aircraft Piloting and Navigation
  • Navigation Instruments

CONT

Embedded GPS INS. The EGI is in an all-attitude navigation system providing outputs of linear and angular acceleration, velocity, position, attitude(roll, pitch, and platform azimuth), magnetic and true heading, altitude, time tags, and time. When installed in the host platforms in the appropriate configuration, the system provides the navigation functions of the equipment it replaces. It uses vehicle electrical power(28 Vdc), turn-on and mode commands, initialization data, and altitude data, as well as Global Positioning System(GPS) satellite inputs for GPS or GPS/Inertial Navigation System(INS) operation, and is able to track five space vehicles simultaneously.

OBS

Attitude. The angle between an imaginary line running from the nose to the tail, and the horizontal. The attitude is judged by the level at which the horizon is seen through the canopy.

Key term(s)
  • all attitude navigation system
  • all attitude reference system
  • all-attitude flight reference system

Domaine(s)
  • Instruments et équipement de bord (Constructions aéronautiques)
  • Pilotage et navigation aérienne
  • Instruments de navigation
  • Lancement et manœuvres dans l'espace
CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Software
CONT

The software version description(SVD) identifies and describes a software version consisting of one or more computer software configuration items(CSCIs). It is used to release, track, and control software versions.

OBS

The term "version" may be applied to the initial release of the software, to a subsequent release of that software, or to one of multiple forms of the software released at approximately the same time (for example, to different sites).

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Spacecraft
DEF

A remote sensing instrument whose viewing angle is rotated from right to left.

OBS

Whereas RADARSAT-1 is a solely right-looking system, RADARSAT-2 will be outfitted with an antenna that can be steered electronically to acquire images to either the right or the left of the sub-satellite track... The switch from one look direction to the other is specified to take less than 10 minutes, that is, about one tenth of the time required to complete one full orbit. Although the look direction switching is an operational feature, the right-looking configuration is regarded as the default mode of operation. Hence, it is expected that about 75% of the imaging will be performed in this particular mode. The left-looking mode will be deployed on occasion, primarily to meet data requirements associated with Antarctic mapping and emergency situations(CSA, 2001).

Subject field(s)
  • Radar, Radio Guidance and Goniometry
  • Spacecraft
  • Remote Sensing
DEF

Remote sensing systems that build up an image by scanning from side to side in a direction that is at right angles to the sensors direction of movement[;] this scanning from side to side is achieved through electromechanical mechanisms which change the direction of view of the sensor.

CONT

Spatial imaging is achieved using the push-broom principle: the across-track scanning is performed electronically and the along-track scanning is made thanks to the satellite motion.

OBS

Sensors aboard the Landsat satellites were built in a "whisk broom"(across track) configuration. In a whisk broom sensor, a mirror scans across the satellite's path, reflecting light into a single detector which collects data one pixel at a time. The moving parts make this type of sensor expensive and more prone to wearing out.
