Since the Villers-Cotterêts Edict in 1539, the French language has officially been a component of national identity. Today, the Constitution(article 2) specifies that the language of the Republic is French, while remaining open to the use of other languages. La Délégation générale à la langue française et aux langues de France(DGLFLF) is a government department whose role is to guide national language policy at inter-ministerial level. Attached to the Ministry of Culture and Communication, the department's role is to examine, pilot and co-ordinate issues, and to track the application of legislative and statutory mechanisms(Law of 4th August 1994 on the use of the French language). It is supported by a network of partner organisations including the Senior Council for the French Language and the General Commission for Terminology and Neologisms. 1, record 15, English, - D%C3%A9l%C3%A9gation%20g%C3%A9n%C3%A9rale%20%C3%A0%20la%20langue%20fran%C3%A7aise%20et%20aux%20langues%20de%20France

The parallel pattern search legs are aligned with the major, or longer, axis of the rectangular search areas, whereas the search legs of the creeping line pattern are aligned with the minor or shorter axis of rectangular search areas. The creeping line pattern is used when : a) the search area is narrow, long, and fairly level, b) the probable location of the target is thought to be on either side of the search track within two points, or c) there is a need for immediate coverage of one end of the search area. 3, record 16, English, - creeping%20line%20pattern

Parallel track search. The aircraft proceeds to a corner of the search area and, flying at the allotted height, sweeps the area maintaining parallel tracks, the first of which is at a distance equal to the sweep width from the side of the rectangular area. Successive tracks are flown parallel to each other but at twice the sweep width apart. 1, record 21, French, - ratissage%20par%20passes%20parall%C3%A8les

The knee-bolter was a steel topped table on a track, with a wide slot in the front to admit the knee-bolter saw. The top of the table was level with the deck so the operator stood in a hole... The saw was vertical and was sixty inches in diameter, ran at 600 RPM and had sixty large, mean-looking, inserted teeth. The table had an arm that stuck out to fit between the operator's legs, hence the name "knee bolter. "The operator would wrestle the block onto the table, and, with his legs, push table and block into the saw, rotating the block so as to peel off the bark. If there was a large knot in the block, he would saw directly through it, so the knot would be the part of the block that would necessarily be wasted in the final cutting of the shingles. 1, record 26, English, - knee%2Dbolter

Center-bearing swing bridge. While swinging, this type of swing bridge is carried entirely on the center pivot; the trailing or balance wheels, which rol1 on a track near the outer edge of the pier, are adjusted with a little clearance so that their only function is to insure lateral stability. When the bridge is closed, the ends are lifted and on the pivot pier independent supports are inserted without lifting so as to carry the live load only. The center supports and end lifts should work simultaneously and be so adjusted that, when the center supports just come to a bearing(with no reaction from the dead load), the ends are lifted to their proper level. 2, record 29, English, - center%2Dbearing%20swing%20bridge

This computerized band was developed by managers to assist in the preparation of their Human Resources Planning exercise. It contains information on HRDC positions, employees, staffing action/adjustments, and Training and Development. Position information collected includes the Position number, title, group and level, exclusion indicator, language requirements, unit, reporting relationship(supervisor's position number and title). Employee information includes the Public service start date, birthdate, home address and telephone number, employee type(full-time, part-time, etc.) position title and number, location and telephone number, bilingual capability, employment history, career aspirations, mobility, training and development history(as well as proposed), date of last performance appraisal(as well as a BF for the next due appraisal). The system also keeps track of start/end dates for acting, secondment and assignment situations with an active BF system. Staffing action/adjustment module keeps track of areas which, in the opinion of the manager, will require some action to ensure that operational demands are met; this includes vacancies which are likely to occur due to long-term disability leave, maternity leave, care and nurturing leave, extended vacation leave and any other situation which will require attention.
