Record 1 2018-08-31

English

Subject field(s)
  • Occupation Names (General)
  • Horse Racing and Equestrian Sports
CONT

The hot walker's number one task is to cool out the horse and he or she must be waiting for the horse when it returns from the track. The exercise rider will stop the horse in the shed row or stall and remove the tack... and the hot walker will... then walk the horse to cool it out from the jog, gallop or breeze it had. Hot walkers walk the horse inside in the barn or in an outside oval walking ring and will stop every lap or so to offer the horse water.

CONT

The indoor events are held in velodromes with tracks that are 333.3-metres long and 7-metres wide, with a banked racing surface of 33 degrees.

CONT

Competitors in the individual and team pursuit line up at opposite ends of the track. It is particularly interesting to watch the skill involved when the lead rider of the four-man team rapidly changes position. As he tires, he swings up the banking of the track and then goes down to the tail of the team for a brief rest.

CONT

It took me five Laps on the blue boarding to work up enough nerve to move onto the first banked section of ’real’ track, after another five Laps I was trembling with nervous energy and decided to slow down and have a breather.

DEF

[A] motor-paced track rider.

CONT

Stehers (stayers) are riders who motorpace behind stripped-down BMW motorcycles with straight exhausts doing over 50 mph.

CONT

Behind the motorcycle is a metal frame that extends rearward and it is here that the cyclist will ride for the race, protected by the windbreak of the standing motorcyclist. It is obvious that the motorcycle needs all that power to overcome the immense drag of the Steher and still reach speeds on the what-must-seem-to-be-minuscule 250 m track of 75km/h.

Traditionally, a motorcycle based vehicle called a "DERNYS" has been used as the pacer in Keirin bicycle racing, but due to problems like the noise of these vehicles, there was a call for quieter, more environment-friendly vehicles like the Yamaha PAS to allow the athletes to better focus on their racing.
