Voltage transformers(potential transformers) are connected between the lines whose potential difference is to be determined and are used to step the voltage down(usually to 115V) and to supply the voltage circuits of the connected instrument burden. Their basic construction is similar to that of a power transformer operating at the same input voltage except that they are designed for optimum performance with the high-impedance secondary loads of the connected instruments. The core is operated at high flux density, and the insulation must be appropriate to the line-to-ground voltage.

OBS

This is accomplished when an X-ray tube is connected directly to the secondary windings of the high voltage transformer without any intervening rectifier. When the cathode is negative with respect to the anode, electrons will flow from the cathode filament to the anode and produce X-rays. During the next half of the electrical cycle, the anode is negative with respect to the cathode, and electrons could flow in the opposite direction. However, as long as the anode is kept cool, no electrons will be emitted from the anode, and no current will flow. The result is that of half wave rectification, where only half of the cycle of the high-voltage current is used to produce X-rays.

OBS

An obvious disadvantage of self-rectification, as opposed to supplying the X-ray tube with an already rectified direct current, is that exposure times must be increased since X-ray production occurs during only half of the time the current is applied. Secondly, repeated exposures could heat the anode to such an extent that electrons are also emitted from the anode. This could result in a reverse flow of electrons in the X-ray tube with excessive heating and destruction of the filament.

The ignition transformer, commonly known as a step-up transformer, is used to step up the voltage to 5, 000 V in order to jump the gap at the end of the ignition electrode. Ignition transformers are quite trouble-free, and require only that the primary voltage correspond to that of the transformer, that the electrical connections be clean and tight, and that the secondary terminals be kept clean. If the secondary terminal post becomes fouled with soot, dust, or foreign matter, the high-tension spark can easily short circuit to the transformer case, resulting in no spark at the ignition electrode. A transformer in good condition should cause the spark to jump a gap of no less than 1/4 in.
