A variety of theodolite that has the telescope so mounted that it can be completely reversed, or transited.

CONT

... the ability to utilize both upper and lower motion enables the American transit to accumulate the angle (make repeated measurements of the same angle), once for each time it is turned.

The surveyor’s transit differs from the theodolite in having the horizontal axis attached directly to the telescope which is not mounted in Y’s and can be turned completely over about the axis.

Dans la mesure azimutale [angles horizontaux], le théodolite réitérateur peut mesurer plusieurs fois le même angle, en utilisant des portions différentes du limbe, ce dernier pouvant être désolidarisé du bâti; la moyenne des mesures élimine des erreurs systématiques.

[Les] cercles [du théodolite réitérateur] peuvent se déplacer, l'un par rapport à la base, l'autre par rapport à la lunette, pour qu'on puisse lire les angles sur n'importe quelle partie de la graduation. [...] Les théodolites modernes sont tous réitérateurs.

A very fine screw giving a tangential movement for making the final adjustment to an instrument of precision(as a surveyor's transit).

CONT

Generally each of these rotations [of the telescope, of the alidade, of the alidade and the lower plate] can be carried out by a slow motion screw (or tangent screw) .... If a large rotation has to be made, then a clamp can be released and the particular component can be rotated freely about its axis. The clamp has to be on before the slow motion screw drive is engaged. The slow motion screws enable accurate setting of the alidade or the telescope to be made.

Surveying instruments.... The "American transit" is essentially a telescope and is usually equipped with a level and stadia hairs.... The telescope can be rotated in elevation and turned completely over, from direct to reversed. The aim in a vertical plane is controlled by the "elevation motion", a clamp with a tangent screw. Two spirit levels on the "upper plate" indicate when the instrument is leveled....
