TRIAL PIT [4 records]

Record 1 2021-09-14

English

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Tests (Construction)
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
  • Soil Science
CONT

One of the most useful, cheapest, and quickest ways of gaining access to formations for inspection and sampling is by trial pit or trench. In the simplest form, the excavations are hand dug with a spade. Deeper excavations may be made by machine.... The advantages of using trial trenches are many. The soil can be inspected in an in situ state, although some careful hand excavation of the sides of the machine excavated trench may be necessary... Bulk, block, or driven tube samples can be taken from the sides or floor of the trench.

CONT

Test trenches. Test trenches can be used to perform the same function as test pits but offer one distinct advantage, i.e., trenches provide a continuous exposure of the continuity and character of the subsurface material along a given line or section.

CONT

A trial pit(or test pit) is an excavation [in the] ground in order to study or sample the composition and structure of the subsurface, usually dug during a site investigation, a soil survey or a geological survey.

OBS

Test pits for examining or sampling soils in situ range from shallow manual or machine excavations to deep, sheeted, and braced pits.

CONT

Subject field(s)
  • Cartography
  • Geological Prospecting
  • Preparatory Mining Work
DEF

A description, or graphic representation drawn to scale, of the successive rock units or the geologic structure revealed by such an exposed surface or as they would appear if cut through by any intersecting plane, such as a diagram of the geologic features or mine workings penetrated in a shaft, borehole, trial pit, or drilled well;...

CONT

A longitudinal section is parallel to the strike of a vein or geological plane. A cross section is perpendicular to the strike.

Subject field(s)
  • Soil Tests (Construction)
  • Engineering Tests and Reliability
  • Soil Mechanics (Engineering)
DEF

A test to determine soil properties performed on the ground, in a borehole, trial pit, or trench as opposed to a laboratory test on a sample. It may be a soil density test, vane test or a dynamic penetration test.

CONT
