TRIANGULATED IRREGULAR NETWORK [3 records]

Record 1 2017-08-24

English

Subject field(s)
  • Mathematical Geography
  • Cartography
CONT

A triangulated irregular network(TIN) is a vector-based representation of a surface. Although TINs are commonly used in applications that involve terrain, they can also be used for representing other variables that can be conceptualized as surfaces.

CONT

Les TIN (réseau triangulé irrégulier) constituent une forme de données géographiques numériques vectorielles et sont construits en triangulant un ensemble de sommets (points). Les sommets sont reliés à une série de segments pour former un réseau de triangles.

DEF

A process by which water bodies show a flat and level water surface in a topographic model.

CONT

Hydro-flattening is the process of creating a lidar [light detection and ranging]-derived DEM [digital elevation model] in which water surfaces appear and behave as they would in traditional topographic DEMs created from photogrammetric digital terrain models (DTMs).

OBS

[A] digital elevation model(DEM) or triangulated irregular network(TIN) derived from LiDAR [light detection and ranging] data will show unpleasant and unnatural water surface due to the fact that LiDAR data does not provide natural breaklines and the elevations of water points is not uniform. Furthermore, hydrologic connectivity in water surfaces is necessary to ensure that the elevation of water surface decreases from upstream(U/S) to downstream(D/S). Therefore, the LiDAR data is hydro-flattened so that water bodies such as streams, rivers, and long reservoirs show an elevation change along their length, whereas ponds, lakes, or other cartographically polygonal water surfaces show a static water surface, consistent with their natural behavior and the surrounding topography...

Subject field(s)

DEF

A line in a TIN [triangulated irregular network] that represents a distinct interruption in the slope of a surface, such as a ridge, road, or stream.

CONT

Le MNT [modèle numérique de terrain] calculé est un objet associatif et dynamique représentant le terrain naturel. Toute modification des points ou des lignes de rupture régénère automatiquement le calcul du MNT et le dessin des courbes de niveau.
