CONT

When water is added to cement a chemical process called hydration takes place. Chemicals in the cement chemically react and are transformed into new compounds. [For example, for the combined materials] tetracalcium aluminate + water + calcium hydroxide [corresponds the] transformed compound tetracalcium aluminate hydrate.

CONT

Tricalcium aluminate plus 12 parts water and calcium hydroxide is converted to tetracalcium aluminate hydrate(3CaO·Al2O3·Ca(OH) 2·12H2O).

CONT

Anthony et al. studied the activation of unreacted calcium by means of injecting limestone into the furnace. They report hydrated tetracalcium aluminate as the major hydration product of the activation process.

OBS

Chemical formula: Ca4Al2O7•nH2O; the small letter "n" must be italicized.

CONT

OBS

Formule chimique : Ca4Al2O7•nH2O; la lettre «n» s'écrit en italique.

CONT

SECAR 41 is a hydraulic binder with an alumina content of approximately 47% and an iron oxide content of approximately 5%. [It] is composed mainly of calcium aluminate phases, which makes it an ideal binder for refractory applications. SECAR 41 is particularly rich in monocalcium aluminate ... which imparts excellent properties to mortars and concretes.

CONT

The most important cement compounds formed on fusion are monocalcium aluminate(CA) and tricalcium pentaluminate(C3A5) ;furthermore, some pentacalcium pentaluminate and small amounts of dicalcium aluminosilicate, dicalcium silicate, and tetracalcium aluminoferrite are also present. Both monocalcium aluminate and tricalcium pentaluminate hydrate initially to a gel CaAl2(OH) 8·6H2O, which gradually changes to a very stable, crystalline complex Ca3Al2(OH) 10·3H2O and a gel of aluminium hydroxide Al(OH) 3.

PHR

Hydrated monocalcium aluminate.

CONT

PHR

Aluminate monocalcique hydraté.

CONT

Using a novel experimental procedure in the field of ceramics/materials science that is based on the precise microanalysis (scanning electron microscopy, coupled with wavelength-dispersive spectroscopy) of the phases that are present in equilibrated specimens, the solid-state compatibility relations in the subsystem ... were established. ... The temperature, composition, and character of the ternary invariant points of the subsystem were established, and the ranges of the solid solutions in periclase, spinel, monocalcium aluminate, and dicalcium aluminate also were studied and determined, up to 1725°C.

CONT

When limestones containing silica and clay are burned, the clay decomposes at between 400°C to 600°C and combines at 950°C to 1250°C(the top end of the burning temperatures for hydraulic lime : sintering takes place at 1300°C to 1400°C) with some of the lime, forming silicates and aluminates, especially tricalcium silicate and dicalcium aluminate.

OBS

Chemical formula: Ca2Al2O5

PHR

Hydrated dicalcium aluminate.

OBS
