English

Subject field(s)

  • Biological Sciences
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
DEF

[A] genetic resource, organism or part thereof, population, or any other biotic component of an ecosystem with actual or potential use or value for humanity.

CONT

... baseline studies should be preceded by an ecological characterization. The objective should be to gain an appreciation for such features as the biological resources important to man, and important components of their habitat, the key biological process such as major trophic relationships, and driving forces such as climatic conditions and transport mechanisms.

Record 2 2009-08-04

English

Subject field(s)
  • Ecology (General)
  • Ecosystems
DEF

A pyramid-shaped diagram representing quantitatively the numbers of organisms, energy relationships, and biomass of an ecosystem; numbers are high for the lowest trophic levels(plants) and low for the highest trophic level(carnivores).

OBS

A typical ecological community in fresh water habitat might be considered a pyramid, with the more complex forms of life at the top trophic level and the nutritional sources at the bottom.

French

Domaine(s)
  • Écologie (Généralités)
  • Écosystèmes
DEF

English

Subject field(s)
  • Environmental Studies and Analyses
  • Ecology (General)
CONT

... laboratory or field experiments could provide some guidance. The obvious ecological phenomenon of interest would be bioaccumulation, the application of which would involve dose-response experiments using the identified target species, or food chain studies if trophic linkage were involved. Such focussed activities would also identify the need for specific, quantitative baseline data.
