The residence time of aerosols in the atmosphere depends on particle size, the height at which injection occurs and condensation processes by which aerosols are washed out. Peu après une éruption, les aérosols stratosphériques sont essentiellement constitués de cendres volcaniques très fines; celles-ci sédimentent rapidement et, après quelques semaines, les aérosols stratosphériques les plus abondants sont des sulfates créés par la conversion photochimique du SO2. Ils vont rester pendant quelques années dans la stratosphère et absorber une partie du rayonnement solaire incident.
