Trotting and harness racing: one of the three kinds of racing in France. It [involves] a gait in which the diagonally opposed legs of the horse come down together. Trotting races are generally carried out on cinder tracks, with on-course judges making sure the horses maintain a trotting gait throughout. Harness racing also requires the horses to maintain a trotting gait as they are driven by a driver [seated] on a sulky. 3, record 3, English, - trotting%20race

The Gelderland, also known as the Gelderlander, is a warmblood horse which originated in the sandy, mid-eastern province of the same name in the Netherlands. Gelderland horses trace their ancestry to native mares of the Gelderland province who where crossed with Andalusian, Neapolitan, Norman, Norfolk Roadster and Holstein stallions. In the nineteenth century East Friesian, Oldenburg, Hackney and Thoroughbred blood was introduced. Gelderlanders were originally bred as utility horses, to work the land as well as provide transportation. Today, the Gelderland is an elegant carriage horse and also possesses talent as a show jumper. Its action is flowing and the breed has an effective high-stepping trot. 2, record 18, English, - Gelderland%20horse

The Missouri Fox Trotter was developed in the rugged Ozark Mountains during the nineteenth century by setters who needed smooth-riding, durable mounts that could travel at a comfortable, surefooted gait for long distances.... The breeding of this stock was largely Arabian, Morgan and plantation horses from the deep south. Later more American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walking and Standardbred breeding was added. It soon became apparent that horses able to perform the easy, broken gait called the "fox trot" were the most useful in the rocky, forest-covered hills of the Ozarks, and selective breeding of the fox trot gait began. 3, record 29, English, - Missouri%20Fox%20trotter

3, record 37, French, - cavaletti

It is interesting to hear the answers people give to the question, "How do you make your horse strike off into Canter or Lope?" The answers range from : hit your horse with the whip by the flanks or kick the ribs of the horse as hard as you can with your heels or spurs or trot faster and faster until the horse by itself strikes off into canter. 4, record 44, English, - break%20into%20gallop

An equine training example of this could be if the rider clicks his tongue just as he feels a young horse about to strike off in canter, and repeats this every time the horse goes into canter, the horse will soon begin to associate the click with the canter transition and produce the canter transition on the click signal. 5, record 44, English, - break%20into%20gallop
