Trotting and harness racing: one of the three kinds of racing in France. It [involves] a gait in which the diagonally opposed legs of the horse come down together. Trotting races are generally carried out on cinder tracks, with on-course judges making sure the horses maintain a trotting gait throughout. Harness racing also requires the horses to maintain a trotting gait as they are driven by a driver [seated] on a sulky.

CONT

Lawmakers reasoned that since a horse in a trotting race was not running as fast as it could run - in a faster gait - trotting races weren’t really races and therefore were not immoral.

Mounted trot races are seen in France.

The Gelderland, also known as the Gelderlander, is a warmblood horse which originated in the sandy, mid-eastern province of the same name in the Netherlands. Gelderland horses trace their ancestry to native mares of the Gelderland province who where crossed with Andalusian, Neapolitan, Norman, Norfolk Roadster and Holstein stallions. In the nineteenth century East Friesian, Oldenburg, Hackney and Thoroughbred blood was introduced. Gelderlanders were originally bred as utility horses, to work the land as well as provide transportation. Today, the Gelderland is an elegant carriage horse and also possesses talent as a show jumper. Its action is flowing and the breed has an effective high-stepping trot.

... at rising trot you’ll spend half of your time in a full seat-balanced over your feet, with your legs AND your crotch and seatbones in contact with the horse. You’ll spend the other half of your time in a half-seat, with your crotch and seatbones OUT of the saddle. Rising to the trot means alternating rhythmically between full seat and half-seat(three-point and two-point).... Your half-seat will be easy if your stirrups are the correct length, and impossible if they aren’t-so DO check this before you begin! When you ride in a half-seat, your legs should be relaxed, KNEES BENT, your heels low, your head up with eyes looking forward, and your hands forward holding the mane or a neckstrap(essential to helping you learn to keep your balance without hurting your horse's mouth).

OBS

In Western riding, this means rising up out of the saddle with the weight in the stirrups. In English riding, the term may mean lightening the seat by pushing more weight down into the heel and slightly inclining the body forward (but not so far that the rider is in a two-point, or jumping, position), or a position used for the hand-gallop, a speed faster than canter.

The Missouri Fox Trotter was developed in the rugged Ozark Mountains during the nineteenth century by setters who needed smooth-riding, durable mounts that could travel at a comfortable, surefooted gait for long distances.... The breeding of this stock was largely Arabian, Morgan and plantation horses from the deep south. Later more American Saddlebred, Tennessee Walking and Standardbred breeding was added. It soon became apparent that horses able to perform the easy, broken gait called the "fox trot" were the most useful in the rocky, forest-covered hills of the Ozarks, and selective breeding of the fox trot gait began.

Canter on the outside lead, performed [unintentionally].

CONT

In the false canter (Counter Canter) or the canter on the wrong lead, the horse leads with the outside foreleg instead of the inside foreleg as he should.

CONT

The counter canter refers to the horse’s ability to take the unnatural lead. In a circle to the right the horse would counter canter in his left lead, in a circle to the left he’d be on the right lead. When used properly, the counter canter can be a tool to encourage the horse to travel with an improved capacity for straightness, balance and rated cadence or speed ... The counter canter or a disunited lead can crop up when a horse is positioned incorrectly for a canter depart or lead change. Make sure you’ve asked for the counter canter when it shows up.

CONT

Melissa Cannon has a lovely horse in Northern Express but today is not their day, the horse losing balance few times during the extended trot work and switching legs during the counter canter before asked.

CONT

Coming out of an extended walk that needed more on it, the horse strikes off into canter on the wrong lead but once Blair swaps his legs over the magic begins ...

OBS

In an intentional counter canter, the horse’s body is upright as the lead leg follows the bridge of the nose, which is tipped ever-so-slightly to the outside. In an accidental wrong lead, the horse’s nose is tipped to the inside of the circle causing the inside shoulder to drop when the lead is picked up. They are very different, even though the footfall is the same.

Low, moveable jump, [in which] the supporting arms are not crossed at right angles and the bar is attached in one of the closer angles between the two arms ...

CONT

Cavaletti are small wooden rails placed on the ground or slightly raised with X-shaped supports. They are used in basic training of a riding horse in order to encourage him to lengthen his stride, improve his balance, and loosen up and straighten his muscles.

CONT

The cavaletti is simply a pole set on 2 x's that give you three(3) training heights : 7", 12" and 17" for gymnastics. Four cavaletti set in a line at the lowest level can improve a horse's trot; set at the highest height they can make a small bounce jump.

The circle starts when the shoulders of the rider are directly opposite to the letter (if riding in a dressage ring) and finishes with the rider’s shoulders opposite to the letter. I tell my riders to envision the circle and then trace it with the horse’s feet. The smaller the circle, the more bend required from the horse.

CONT

The first, and arguably the easiest, circle to ride in dressage tests is the 20m circle. This movement is required through Second Level in U. S. dressage tests and is performed at the trot and canter.

It is interesting to hear the answers people give to the question, "How do you make your horse strike off into Canter or Lope?" The answers range from : hit your horse with the whip by the flanks or kick the ribs of the horse as hard as you can with your heels or spurs or trot faster and faster until the horse by itself strikes off into canter.

CONT

An equine training example of this could be if the rider clicks his tongue just as he feels a young horse about to strike off in canter, and repeats this every time the horse goes into canter, the horse will soon begin to associate the click with the canter transition and produce the canter transition on the click signal.

CONT

The horse should strike off into the canter, on the lead you have indicated.

CONT

Get a nice trot going and strike off at the canter on the leg next to the fence.

OBS

Although a canter and a gallop are the same gait, the canter tends to be the gentler of the two.
