The reed instruments of the orchestra are found among the woodwinds. They include the members of the clarinet family—clarinet, bass clarinet, and E-flat clarinet, which are single-reed instruments—and the members of the oboe and bassoon families—oboe, English horn, bassoon, and contrabassoon—which are double-reed instruments.(The saxophone is also a reed instrument—a single-reed.) A woodwind instrument is really just a long tube. In order for the instrument to produce a sound, something has to make the column of air inside the tube vibrate. On a reed instrument, that something is the reed : the player's breath causes the reed to vibrate, and the vibrating reed causes the column of air to vibrate. On a single-reed instrument, the reed vibrates against a mouthpiece; on a double-reed instrument, the two halves of a slit reed vibrate against each other.

A reed or blade of other material that serves as the sounding apparatus of certain wind instruments.

The single reed for the clarinet is made from a slip cut from the stem of "A. donax. "After being trimmed, the reed is flattened on the inner side, while the end of the rounded outer side is scraped down to a feather edge. The thick end of the reed is attached, flat side down, to the mouthpiece by a metal ligature or length of twine. In playing, the thin end of the reed vibrates, alternately closing and opening the space between the reed and the mouthpiece. The vibration carries through the wedged-shaped tone chamber in the mouthpiece and into the air column in the tube.

The mercurial barometer consists of a glass tube, sealed at one end and filled with pure mercury. After being heated to expel the air, it is inverted in a small cup of mercury called the cistern. The mercury in the tube sinks slightly, creating above it a vacuum(the Torricellian vacuum). Atmospheric pressure on the surface of the mercury in the cistern supports the column in the tube, which varies in height with variations in atmospheric pressure and hence with changes in elevation, generally decreasing with increases in height above sea level.

The Fortin barometer... features a cistern partly made of glass, in which one can observe the lower level of the mercury and determine the zero point of the barometric scale. Before reading the height of the mercury column in the barometric tube, it is necessary to adjust the mercury level in the cistern so that it coincides with the tip of an ivory reference screw.... Currently, there are three major configurations of blood pressure monitors for home use: the mercury sphygmomanometer, the aneroid manometer, and semiautomatic manual-inflation or automatic-inflation digital devices.

Blood pressure measurement by sphygmomanometer is normally performed using a mercury manometer. This can consist of a U-tube half-filled with mercury, but more commonly it is a single tube, held vertical in use, which sits in a small reservoir of mercury. The reservoir is connected by a rubber tube to the source of air pressure to be measured. As pressure is applied mercury is forced up the column and the pressure can be read from a scale behind. The actual pressure is indicated by the difference in the level of the mercury in the column and the reservoir.

The mercury manometer is in fact only a part of the device called "mercury tensiometer". Mercury manometers are used in numerous fields. For example, the negative pressure within a dairy’s milking system is controlled by a mercury manometer.

Rapid vertical oscillations of the column of a mercury barometer.

The mercurial barometer... in its simplest form... consists of a glass tube a little more than 30 inches in length and of uniform internal diameter. With one end closed, the tube is filled with mercury, and inverted into a cup of mercury. The mercury in the tube falls until the column is just supported by the pressure of the atmosphere on the open cup, leaving a vacuum at the upper end of the tube. The height of the column indicates atmospheric pressure, greater pressures supporting higher columns of mercury. The mercurial barometer is subject to rapid variations in height, called pumping, due to pitch and roll of the vessel and temporary changes in atmospheric pressure in the vicinity of the barometer. Because of this... the mercurial barometer has been replaced at sea by the aneroid barometer.

Designed for mechanization of handling operations at the drilling site. The rotary crane is installed on a special base near the rig. The main part is a stationary column with a tubular section which is mounted on the base hinge. The column is supported in vertical position by two tube braces. A cap is set on the upper part of the column using plain bearings. The ball on the upper part of the column accepts the vertical load. ... fabric-enclosed sand drains. [The method] consists of a polyethylene monofilament tube of varying diameter running the length of the compressible stratum. This net-type tube with 1. 2 by 1. 6 mm openings is inserted into a crane-mounted casing that drives the assembly into position for sand filling. The casing is withdrawn by a crane while the fabric-filled sand column is left behind with the aid of applied air pressure... As with other applications of fabrics in drainage, the proper fabric can be considered to be part of the drainage system, not merely used as a separating medium.

Air gauges are of two types : the flow or column type which indicates air velocity, and the pressure type which indicates air pressure in the system.... [In the] column type air gauge... the air flows through a transparent tapered tube in which a float is suspended as a result of this air flow.... The air flowing through the gauge exhausts through the passages in the gauging head into the clearance between the head and the workpiece. The rate of flow is proportional to the clearance indicated by the position of the float in the column. The gauge is set to a master and the float is then positioned by means of an adjusting knob.
