Flux Thimble Guide Tubes. Flux thimbles are complements of the reactor in-core neutron monitoring or flux-mapping system. They are inserted into the reactor pressure vessel through the bottom... A thimble guide tube is divided into two parts. The upper part is located inside the fuel assembly, while the lower insertion is located between the reactor vessel bottom and the lower core plate.

Flux thimbles are retracted during refueling and maintenance operations. Guide tubes provide housing and support to these thimbles along most of their lengths.

To obtain a more exact representation of the neutron flux distribution within the core, additional neutron flux measurements are conducted within the core... Each incore probe is fixed to the end of a flexible cable referred to as a teleflex cable for moving it inside a measuring channel of the instrumentation of the nuclear reactor. Each measuring channel opens at one end into an instrumentation area in the bottom part of the reactor building. The fission probes are moved inside the measuring channels from the instrumentation area. Each measuring channel includes a fuel assembly instrumentation tube inside the core of the nuclear reactor and a glove finger inside the instrumentation tube in which the fission probe moves. The neutron flux is measured in a set of fuel assemblies distributed throughout the section of the core.

A long open tube fixed above the core barrel in the shot-drill method of exploratory boring. The enlarged space above the sediment tube reduces the upward velocity of the flushing water and the coarse chippings are deposited in the tube where they are retained until drawn up to the tube.

In some types of core barrels, the coarser particles in the cuttings moving up in the drilling fluid tend to fall back because of the decrease in velocity of the fluid. To prevent this, core barrels, especially in the case of shot drilling, are provided with special sludge barrels for collecting coarse cuttings. Such a sludge barrel sometimes is termed a "calyx" barrel.

La vitesse du fluide de circulation diminue donc brusquement au-dessus du tube à sédiments. Les gros débris de roches qui ne pourraient pas être remontés jusqu'à la surface tombent et s'accumulent dans celui-ci. Le remplissage de ce tube donne ainsi une image inversée des terrains traversés. Pour que son emploi soit possible, il faut que le diamètre des tiges soit nettement plus faible que celui du forage.
