2, record 9, French, - courant%20de%20gaz

Energy spectroscopy. For energy analysis the output current pulse from a PMT [photomultiplier tube] or from a semiconductor detector is often applied to a charge-sensitive preamplifier. The preamplifier produces a voltage pulse with a peak amplitude that is proportional to the total charge in the current pulse, which is proportional to the energy absorbed from the incident radiation. Amplifiers and filters are used to expand the range of the peak amplitude and to shape the signal from the preamplifier, a process that maximizes the signal-to-noise ratio for the system. For energy analysis the peak amplitude of the shaped pulse represents the information of interest. Discriminators and single-channel analyzers(SCA) can be used, following the signal shaping system, to determine the presence of certain energies of detected radiation. A discriminator produces an output logic pulse if it's input signal exceeds a preset threshold level. An SCA produces an output logic pulse if the peak amplitude of it's input signal falls within the energy window that is established with two preset threshold levels. 1, record 10, English, - energy%20spectroscopy

Hot cathodes may be either directly heated, where the filament itself is the source of electrons, or indirectly heated, where the filament is electrically insulated from the cathode; this configuration minimizes the introduction of hum when the filament is energized with alternating current. 5, record 24, French, - compteur%20de%20Geiger%2DM%C3%BCller

When an ionizing particle enters the device, it collides with gas atoms and strikes electrons from their orbit around the nucleus of the gas atoms. In addition, an ionizing particle striking the outside of the tube can also knock electrons off the metal casing. In either case, these free electrons then are attracted to the positively charged central wire, gaining energy by the attraction. As they approach the wire they knock electrons off other atoms, creating an avalanche or cascade effect which results in a pulse of current large enough to be detected. A "quenching gas" is usually added to the filler gas so that these avalanches will dissipate over time and not continue indefinitely, which would cause inaccuracy or electronic failure. 1, record 28, English, - quenching%20gas

The most common current wing design is the cantilever. A single large beam, called the main spar, runs through the wing, typically nearer the leading edge at about 25 percent of the total chord. In flight, the wings generate lift, and the wing spars are designed to carry this load through the fuselage to the other wing. To resist fore and aft movement, the wing will usually be fitted with a second smaller drag-spar nearer the trailing edge, tied to the main spar with structural elements or a stressed skin. The wing must also resist twisting forces, done either by a monocoque "D" tube structure forming the leading edge, or by the aforementioned linking two spars in some form of box beam or lattice girder structure. 4, record 29, English, - cantilever%20wing

An X-ray tube providing rectification of the high voltage by itself. 1, record 30, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 30, Textual support number: 1 OBS
This is accomplished when an X-ray tube is connected directly to the secondary windings of the high voltage transformer without any intervening rectifier. When the cathode is negative with respect to the anode, electrons will flow from the cathode filament to the anode and produce X-rays. During the next half of the electrical cycle, the anode is negative with respect to the cathode, and electrons could flow in the opposite direction. However, as long as the anode is kept cool, no electrons will be emitted from the anode, and no current will flow. The result is that of half wave rectification, where only half of the cycle of the high-voltage current is used to produce X-rays. 1, record 30, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube
Record number: 30, Textual support number: 2 OBS
An obvious disadvantage of self-rectification, as opposed to supplying the X-ray tube with an already rectified direct current, is that exposure times must be increased since X-ray production occurs during only half of the time the current is applied. Secondly, repeated exposures could heat the anode to such an extent that electrons are also emitted from the anode. This could result in a reverse flow of electrons in the X-ray tube with excessive heating and destruction of the filament. 1, record 30, English, - self%2Drectifying%20tube

Classical DC(direct current) electrical discharge tube. In the glow discharge regime(10^14 to 5x10^18 charged particles/m^3, 10^4 to 5x10^4 K) the plasma is luminous due to excitation collisions by accelerated electrons. At high current densities the high heat load on the cathode triggers electron emission and the discharge changes to the highly luminous arc regime(10^20 to 10^25 charged particles/m^3, 2x10^3 to 10^5 K). 1, record 39, English, - discharge%20regime

Si le soluté passant dans ce détecteur a un potentiel d'ionisation inférieur à 10,2eV, il s'ionise en absorbant un photon. Les ions issus de cette photoionisation sont collectés en appliquant un potentiel positif sur une des électrodes. In 1956, Harley and Pretorius described a simple discharge detector for gas chromatography based on the electrical properties of a glow discharge, the voltage across the gaseous discharge being a function of the type of gas present. Druyvesteyn and Penning in 1940 reviewed the complex nature of the glow discharge, noting that the discharge is maintained by electrons emitted from the cathode which result from processes related to positive ion bombardment, photoelectric emission, and collisions with excited atoms. When trace quantities of a material eluted from a chromatographic column enter the detector (consisting of a small platinum disk cathode and a tungsten wire anode), a voltage change resulted which was recorded. 2, record 46, English, - glow%20discharge%20detector

Semiconductive Thin Film Detector. Using the known principle that the adsorption and desorption of gases cause a change in electrical conductivity of semiconductors, Seiyama et al. developed a new chromatographic detector for gaseous components.... The current, depending upon the resistance of the film, is converted to voltage by the variable resistance, which is fed without amplification to a recorder. Resistance also adjusts the input voltage of the recorder at desired sensitivity. Using zinc oxide as an example of a typical film material, the conductivity of its film maintains a fixed value when the nitrogen carrier gas is passed at a constant flow rate throught the borosilicate glass tube. When a small amount of another gas or vapor is added to the carrier gas, its conductivity is changed. 1, record 48, English, - semiconductive%20thin%20film%20detector

Domestic burners... employ either one of two methods to prepare the fuel oil for combustion. These are atomization(spraying) and vaporization(heating). Atomization or spraying is divided into three types, namely, high-pressure atomization, low-pressure atomization, and centrifugal atomization. With high-pressure atomization used by high-pressure gun-type burners, the oil pressure is built up to 100 psi by a pump and delivered through an oil line to a specially designed nozzle from which it sprays out into the combustion chamber in a vaporous cloud of tiny globules or droplets. This mist of fine oil droplets is met by a current of air moving down the blast(gun) tube, and the oil and air mix in the combustion chamber after leaving the burner.
