The purpose of a flare on the end of a tube is twofold. First, it provides a flange that is gripped between the sleeve or flare nut and the body of a fitting. This prevents the end of the tube from slipping out of the fitting. Second, the flare acts as a gasket between the sleeve and the cone of the fitting, thus providing a tight seal. [The] flare must be nearly perfect because minute cracks or irregularities would permit leakage at the junction.

Pyrotechnic Tubing Connector. The Pyrotool would employ a pyrotechnic charge to compress the fittings. It would include a piston and cylinder containing the fittings and would be preattached to the end of a tube section. The user would insert the mating tube in the tool and fitting and would detonate the charge by mechanical or electrical means. The burning charge would generate pressure on the piston face, driving the piston toward the mating tube so that it compresses the fitting, thereby joining the tube ends... Once used, the tool would remain on the joined tubes.

Horns were first applied to earmolds in the late 1950s in the "Acoustic Modifier"--a short-canal, wide-bore mold. Enlarging a sound bore will enhance high frequencies passing through it; reducing it will reduce the high frequency components. The key to horn theory involved the change in bore diameter, not its shape. With the extended high frequency range of many of today's hearing aids, a horn of some type should be employed to preserve the performance and achieve a successful fitting. Probably the most popular style is the Libby Horn--a tapered, one-piece sound tube which is replaceable in the dispenser's office.
