Subject field(s)
  • Burners and Steamfitting
CONT

Oil furnace operations have not changed very much. On a call for heat from the thermostat, the burner motor will start. Oil is now pumped to the nozzle, and the ignition transformer is energized. The nozzle is designed to spray the oil into the fire tube as a fine mist. The ignition transformer is designed to create an electrical arc across the electrodes. As the oil mist(also mixed with air) comes in contact with the arc, ignition takes place, and the fire is started.

CONT

Burner controller: The controller is usually located in front of the burner. On a call for heat the controller starts a sequence of events that ensure safe operation before the burner is allowed to start. The controller continues to monitor burner operation while the boiler is running. If for any reason the controller senses an unsafe operating condition it will shut the burner off. Pushing the manual reset on the controller will often restart the boiler.

DEF

A horizontal, fire tube boiler consisting of a cylindrical steel shell with 1 or more cylindrical, internal combustion chambers located (generally) in the lower portion, and with a bank or banks (passes) of tubes attached to both end closures. The combustion chamber(s) and tubes are completely surrounded by water. A Scotch boiler is described by the number of passes, and whether it is a dryback boiler (for stationary service) or a wetback boiler (for marine or stationary service).

CONT

The Scotch marine boiler is a fire-tube boiler return tubular unit. It consists of a cylindrical shell containing the firebox and tubes. The tubes surround the upper portion of the firebox and are rolled into tube sheets on each end of the boiler. Combustion gases pass to the rear of the furnace, returning through the tubes to the front, where they are discharged to the stack.

CONT

Some Scotch boilers are fired from both ends; consequently they are called "double-ended Scotch boilers".

CONT

Pyrohydrolysis is a lixiviant regeneration process in which metal chlorides obtained from leaching either primary or secondary raw materials can be thermally decomposed into metal oxides and hydrogen chloride. Every metal chloride hydrolyses under different conditions, i. e. temperature and gas atmosphere, which opens up opportunities for metal separation. The separation of iron from zinc, lead and/or cadmium present as oxide, ferrite or silicate in both waste materials and ores through pyrohydrolysis is being investigated in both a tube furnace an a 100 mm diameter fluid bed.

A vacuum-feed system depends on pressure difference to force the metal from the holding furnace to the shot chamber [in die casting].(...) a vacuum pump evacuates the air from the shot chamber and the heated tube(usually by way of the casting cavity and through a filter or trap). The metal from the holding pot then flows through the heated tube and into the shot chamber, to fill the vacuum.
