CONT

Flyer : A device used to insert twist into slubbing, roving, or yarn, and to serve a guide for winding it onto a bobbin. The flyer is shaped like an inverted U.... One arm of the U is solid and the other is hollow. The yarn enters through the top of the hollow arm, travels downward, and emerges at the bottom where it is wound around a presser finger onto the take-up package.

CONT

DEF

Type of serve in which the player imparts a forward or overspin rotation to the ball causing it to bounce high after ground contact. The spin imparted by the racket is the opposite of what it would be normally.

OBS

Not to be confused with the "American twist(serve) ", "twist(serve) "or kick serve(=kicker), which is a topspin serve with an added "twist". The term "topspin serve" is a generic. One can deliver a "topspin serve" without it "kicking up" very high. "Kicker" : slang. See also "high-kicking serve".

CONT

For the topspin serve you throw the ball above your head, and bend your elbow sharply and bring the racket up so that the ball rolls across the short string and thus departs with topspin on it.

PHR

Perfectly-aimed topspin serve.

PHR

Topspin serve jumps up.

OBS

Lanzamiento de pelota: a la izquierda. Trayectoria: Izquierda-derecha y de abajo arriba. Utilización: segundo servicio. Ideal para subidas a la red.

CONT

DEF

A type of topspin serve hit with a combination of topspin and sidespin. The ball not only takes a high bounce, it also flies in a direction opposite of what one would normally expect it to.

CONT

An exageration of the topspin serve turns the service into a kick service or "American twist". A right-hander's American twist serve puts left-to-right spin on the ball. Such a serve can present difficulties for the receiver, particularly on grass where the bounce could be tricky.

OBS

The "kick serve" is also called the "kicker". It became known as the "american twist" or "american twist serve" in the first Davis Cup match in 1900 when the finalists, Holcombe Ward, a Harvard man, and his college friend, Dwight Davis, used the stroke they had developed to beat their English opponents.

CONT

If the kick serve is correctly delivered it can often be followed in so as to make your next shot the volley you might have tried on a successful power serve ... Try to mix the angle of [your] serves and watch for weaknesses in your opponent, e.g., a backhand to a high-kicking serve is not easily played at club standard.

OBS

"Blow" is not a standard term used in tennis circles. However it can be used to describe the hitting the ball with the tennis racket. Related terms: drive, shot. Important nuance: a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i.e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents ("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.

CONT

[The American Twist serve :] hit the ball a glancing blow while your racket is still traveling upward.
