Delta differential one-way ranging(delta-DOR) [:] For certain mission applications, especially targeting a landing site, it is also important to know the spacecraft position in the plane of the sky, which cannot be computed from the line-of-sight ranging data. Another method is needed to address this gap. This is differential one-way ranging(known as delta-DOR), a navigation capability that also benefits RS [radio science] in that the experiments data quality improves from optimizing the navigation solution. Delta-DOR is derived from the more general VLBI [very long baseline interferometric] measurements where two or more tracking stations on different continents are used to determine the position and velocity of the spacecraft in the plane of the sky.

The Atlantic Stratocumulus Transition Experiment(ASTEX) was conducted in June 1992 off North Africa, in the area of Azores and Madeira Islands. ASTEX was based on two islands and several ships in an area where the total cloud cover(mostly stratocumulus) ranges from 50-60%. The region is dominated by low-level clouds with moderate optical thicknesses, from about 1 to 10 on average. The optically thinner(more highly broken) clouds generally have cloud tops below the 800 mb level). The optically thicker clouds have lower top pressures down to about 700 mb. The region is characterized by broken low cloudiness and strong gradients of low level cloud amount. Satellite studies show cloud conditions ranging from solid stratocumulus decks to broken trade cumulus. The region is not directly influenced by continental effects, and islands provide suitable sites for surface observations and aircraft operations. ASTEX was thus able to address issues related to the stratocumulus to trade-cumulus transition and cloud-mode selection.

Figure 7. 11 shows a snapshot of SMITHTOWN's "notebook" facility, which allows the student to record her experiments. The system implements two simultaneous pedagogical intentions : teaching principles of economics and teaching general investigative behaviors. Bites at the economics level monitor which laws the student is discovering, supplying the name of the new concept when she makes a relevant hypothesis. If the student flounders excessively, the system can become more directive and suggest experiments according to a curriculum that organizes the(domain bites). Bites for investigative behaviors monitor various skills of scientific inquiry such as the ability to collect and record data in a systematic way.
