The Indian-meal moth has a wing-spread of about 2 centimetres. The forewings are creamy white next to the body, and have a reddish-brown colour with a coppery lustre on the outer two-thirds. The female moth lays about 200 eggs, either singly or in groups, on food material. The larvae are dirty white in colour, often with a greenish or pinkish tint. The newly hatched larvae are almost never seen because of their small size and the fact that they burrow as far as two metres into the grain mass. They normally remain in the grain until they have completed their larval growth. When fully grown they are about 1. 2 centimetres long. In summer their life cycle is about six weeks. 1, record 7, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth
Record number: 7, Textual support number: 2 CONT
The Indian-meal moth is cosmopolitan in distribution, feeding on stored grain as well as nuts, dried fruits and packaged cereals. The principal damage caused to wheat is to the germ: a single larva may destroy the germ of approximately 50 kernels in completing its development. Degermed kernels reduce the grade and produce flour inferior in baking quality. 1, record 7, English, - indian%2Dmeal%20moth

Cadelles are one of the largest insects to infest grain. They are shiny black in colour, about 8 to 9 millimetres in length, and easily recognized by their large mandibles with which they can gnaw through sacking and even wood. The larva is also easy to recognize, with its black head and two black prongs on the last segment. The larva also has dark spots on top of the dorsal section. The cadelle has one of the longest life cycles of the beetles. The females lay about 900 eggs. At 28 degrees C and a relative humidity of 70 to 80%, it takes about 80 days from egg to adult. 2, record 8, French, - cadelle

Because of significant advantages, the kraft process has become established as the world's dominant pulping method. Nonetheless, the process also has some severe shortcomings.... Two add-on technologies date from pre-1970, the polysulfide process(used commercially on a limited basis) and the H2S pretreatment process(demonstrated at the pilot plant level). Both methods are successful in providing significant increases in pulp yield, up to 7 % on dry wood. Unfortunately, both methods are associated with increased concentration of sulfur in the chemical cycle, which exacerbates the odor problem. Additionally, both methods require further processing steps that increase the capital and operating costs of the pulp mill. 1, record 21, English, - H2S%20pretreatment

2, record 21, French, - pr%C3%A9traitement%20au%20H2S

Runners can be classified into two types, namely the cold runner and the hot runner. The mold temperature for the cold runner is similar to the mold temperature for the cavity. A typical multi-head breaker is a rubber-tired, self-propelled unit which carries 1, 000 to 1, 500 pound hammers mounted laterally in pairs. Half of the hammers are in a forward row and the remainder diagonally offset in a rear row so that there is continuous breakage from side to side. Each pair of hammers is attached to a hydraulic lift cylinder which operates as an independent unit. Each unit can develop between 1, 000 and 8, 000 foot pounds of energy depending upon drop height selected. The units can cycle at a rate of 30 to 35 impacts per minute. Something that would make ecologists happy is a clean airplane. And the Ipanema, Brazil' s first totally alcohol-powered aircraft, is almost off the ground. The project has been in development for two years, under the wing of Neiva, a division of the aircraft manufacturer Embraer and Brazil' s largest agricultural aircraft manufacturer. The Ipanema does not pollute because, unlike conventionally fuelled engines, its alcohol-fuelled engine releases no lead residues into the atmosphere. However, for farmers, the real advantage is low operating cost. "Alcohol is four times less expensive than regular aviation fuel. So, while the alcohol engine consumes a little more fuel, just like automobiles, the bottom line is a savings of about 60 percent"... The alcohol-fuelled engine also boasts five percent more power. This slight advantage will allow the plane to carry extra quantities of crop-dusting products. Another advantage is that this type of engine runs cooler, giving it a longer maintenance cycle and useful life... The aircraft is still in the approval process, so the first alcohol-powered Ipanema will not fly until March 2005, after it has been completely certified. 1, record 40, English, - alcohol%20aircraft

Metering pumps move precise volumes of liquid in a specified time period to provide accurate flow rates. This class of pumps moves liquids in two stages : the suction stroke and the discharge stroke. During the suction stroke, liquid is pulled into the pump cavity past the inlet check valve. During the discharge stroke, the inlet valve closes; the outlet valve opens, and the liquid is pushed out. Vary the flow either by changing the stroke length or by adjusting the cycle frequency. Described below are a few types of metering pumps [i. e. ] bellows pumps,... diaphragm pumps,... piston pumps,... travelling cylinder pumps... 5, record 45, English, - metering%20pump

Whether washing is used or not, the wheat must be brought to a specific moisture content to prepare it for milling. This is achieved by several cycles of wetting and resting. In milling technology this is called tempering. The wetting is carried out in a damping conveyor where a controlled amount of water is sprayed on the moving wheat as it is conveyed slowly to the tempering bin where the wheat is allowed to rest for a predetermined period. Following the first tempering, the wheat may go through a second tempering cycle. A two stage tempering system is preferred over a single stage, since there are occasions when the moisture content of the grain must be increased by as much as 6. 0%. It is much easier to make this addition in two stages, separated by a rest period, to allow for proper distribution of moisture in the wheat kernel. Tempering the wheat to a proper moisture content is an essential part of the milling process. Optimal tempering toughens the bran and thereby facilitates its separation from the endosperm without extensive powdering. It also mellows the endosperm and this facilitates its reduction without excessive starch damage. 1, record 54, English, - wetting

1, record 54, French, - humidification

Three-Wheel Roll Bending is a technique that uses three round-bend dies to form the tube. This style of bending is typically used for large radius bends and coils. The bend is created when the top center bend die is hydraulically lowered into the tube as the two lower left and right bend dies rotate in unison in one direction and then reverse direction when required. CNC versions of this machine allow an operator to alter the pressures during the bending cycle and thus create an elliptical shape or a bend with multiple bend radius. 1, record 60, English, - roll%20bending

""DINOFLAJ is a database system containing a current classification of fossil and living dinoflagellates down to generic rank, and an index of fossil dinoflagellates at generic, specific, and infraspecific ranks. Dinoflagellates are single-celled organisms that have two distinctive flagella during at least part of their life cycle and/or a special type of nucleus called a dinokaryon. They are probably best known as a principal cause of "red tides" and paralytic shellfish poisoning. A glossary and an extensive list of references for modern and fossil dinoflagellate taxonomic references are included, and all information is hyperlinked for convenient browsing. The system is available in two forms : a web site and a CD-ROM version. ""As of October 1, 1998, the full version of DINOFLAJ will be available online or on CD-ROM. There are two basic types of auroral disturbance.... those generated by transient or explosive activity on the visible surface of the Sun, typically solar flares, the frequency of which tends to increase or decrease according to the 11 year sunspot cycle [and those] generated by the continuous streams of particles emanating from the active regions of the sun that spray the earth each time the sun rotates. Typical regions are the coronal holes which are most active in the declining years of the sunspot cycle so that this type of aurora is most frequent after sunspot maximum. Such aurorae are quieter in form, may repeat themselves for several nights on end and then recur 27 days later after on rotation of the sun. 1, record 67, English, - auroral%20disturbance

The great majority of heat pumps work on the principle of the vapour compression cycle. The main components in such a heat pump system are the compressor, the expansion valve and two heat exchangers referred to as evaporator and condenser. The components are connected to form a closed circuit... A volatile liquid, known as the working fluid or refrigerant, circulates through the four components. In the evaporator the temperature of the liquid working fluid is kept lower than the temperature of the heat source, causing heat to flow from the heat source to the liquid, and the working fluid evaporates. Vapour from the evaporator is compressed to a higher pressure and temperature. The hot vapour then enters the condenser, where it condenses and gives off useful heat. Finally, the high-pressure working fluid is expanded to the evaporator pressure and temperature in the expansion valve. The working fluid is returned to its original state and once again enters the evaporator. The compressor is usually driven by an electric motor and sometimes by a combustion engine. 4, record 68, English, - vapor%20compression%20heat%20pump

The pot is a small-bore plunger cylinder without a torpedo. The two cylinders are connected by a valve. When the valve is open, the melting or plasticizing cylinder pushes the material into the nozzle end of the pot, forcing the plunger back. When the plunger moves back an experimentally predetermined distance, the filling stops and the valve is closed, because the backward motion of the plunger actuates a limit switch. At the appropriate time in the cycle the material is injected into the mold from the second cylinder, the so-called shooting cylinder or pot. 2, record 70, English, - injection%20cylinder

1, record 78, English, - plasticizing%20cylinder

Another process somewhat related to extrusion blow molding is the extrusion/molded neck process. Still used today by Owens-Illinois, this is a proprietary process that traces its roots to glass-blowing technology. It is unique in that the bottle neck finish is injection molded and the bottle body is extrusion blow-molded. In this process, the two halves of a neck finish cavity or neckring are mounted to an actuating head assembly, which intermeshes with the two halves of the blow-mold cavity. The process cycle begins with the main body mold cavity open and the neckring cavity closed. The actuating head assembly moves downward to contact the extrusion die head. When it is in position, extrusion pressure fills the neck section with plastic melt. After it is held for one to two seconds, the head assembly moves upward while, simultaneously, the parison is extruded. When the head assembly reaches the top of its stroke, the blow-mold cavity closes on the parison. The remaining steps of parison pinch-off, blowing, and part removal all follow conventional techniques. Although the production cycle is somewhat slow, the process offers the quality advantage of an accurately molded neck and the process advantage of a parison held at both ends. 1, record 80, English, - extrusion%20molded%20neck%20blow%2Dmolding%20process

Truly rare quality Canadian coins are very infrequently offered or sold. In many cases, rare coins may appear only once every few years of possibly only once every major coin cycle(5-8 years). The last sale of such an item may be meaningless as an aid to repricing such a coin in a "new" market. "Trends" for such coins are non-existant. Such coins are usually priced by relating them to other similar coins of comparable rarity and using historical relationships of pricing between the two to arrive at a "fair" asking price. In the end the price will be what a willing buyer will pay a willing seller. Considerable research may go in to pricing such coins, certainly more than looking them up in a Trends List. 1, record 82, English, - pricing%20rare%20coins

The nuclear process that powers the sun. It involves the fusion of nuclei in 3 kinds of collisions. The cycle starts for any one proton when it collides with another. This collision produces a deuterium nucleus, a neutrino that shoots off into space and a position that eventually annihilates a stray electron. Next, the deuterium nucleus is hit by another proton, producing a nucleus of helium-3 and a burst of gamma rays. The helium-3 hits another helium-3, producing a nucleus of inert helium and two protons. These 2 protons now start the proton-proton cycle over again. 4, record 85, English, - proton%2Dproton%20chain

Both methods are successful in providing significant increases in pulp yield, up to 7% on dry wood. Unfortunately, both methods are associated with increased concentration of sulfur in the chemical cycle, which exacerbates the odor problem. Additionally, both methods require further processing steps that increase the capital and operating costs of the pulp mill. 1, record 90, English, - polysulfide%20process

1, record 90, French, - proc%C3%A9d%C3%A9%20au%20polysulfure

Principle of operation of some automatic weapons, whereby the recoil energy imparted to the barrel is used to actuate the mechanism and perform the necessary cycle of operation. Two systems of recoil operation have been in use, as follows : a. Short recoil operation. The breechblock remains locked to the barrel only while the chamber pressure is high. This involves a barrel travel of only about 1/2 inch. The device locking the breechblock to the barrel is then released and the two components separate. The barrel may remain stationary and await the return of the breechblock, but in most modern designs the barrel has its own spring and goes forward into battery, e. g.. 50 calibre heavy machine-gun. b. Long recoil operation. The barrel and locked breech recoil a greater distance than the length of the cartridge. The breechblock is then held to the rear while the barrel is driven forward by its own spring. When the barrel is fully forward, it trips the catch releasing the breechblock, which then feeds the next cartridge into the chamber. Mainly encountered in semi-automatic shotguns. Fonctionnement par long recul.
