The result of hitting the tennis ball with a tennis racquet; sometimes refers to the actual placement of the ball or manner in which it is struck.

CONT

A shot is the combination of a stroke and the situation in which it is used.

OBS

"Long" is an informal expression used to indicate that a shot went out past the baseline. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. Consequently, a "shot" is the result of the "stroke". "Shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather an imprecise, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" are often used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings. The Spanish term "pegada" works well as an equivalent for "shot", although technically the term more specifically refers to the actual hitting action caused by the racket coming in contact with the ball, and not to the end result [cause vs effect].

Today the dividing line between [the] expressions ["two raw material injection moulding" and "two component injection moulding"] has become blurred as a result of the constant further development of the processes, new ideas and mould developments. In particular, two component injection moulding is also used as a term for the field of two raw material injection moulding(two shot moulding). The terms must therefore be clearly defined at the beginning of project discussions.

CONT

A brand new range of machines for multi-material moulding is now available due to the modular concept of the CANBIO line. Negri Bossi is producing this range of machines to meet the increasing requirements of the market for "multi-shot" and "multi-colour" mouldings.

CONT

Gas-assist and multiple-material molding are among the hottest value-adding developments to hit injection molding in years.

DEF

Cleaning and descaling metal by shot peening or by means of a stream of abrasive powder blown through a nozzle under air pressure in the range 30-150 pounds per square inch.

DEF

A process of abrasive blast-cleaning using small metal spheres. [Definition standardized by ISO.]

OBS

shot blasting : There are two cleaning lines, actually called "pickle lines", in the United States that use grit abrasive blasting as the basic means for removing scale from strip. The entry and exit ends of these lines are identical with standard continuous pickling lines... In the processing section, abrasive cleaning machines designed to remove all of the scale are substituted for the first two or three acid tanks of a standard line. One or two full-length pickling tanks follow the abrasive cleaning equipment... In 1966, an abrasive-blast process called "No Acid Descaling" for cleaning hot-rolled strip and sheet for cold reduction was introduced. This process cleans in two stages with round steel and steel grit...

  • Traitements de surface des métaux
  • Sablage et ponçage des métaux
DEF

DEF

A field goal attempt in which the ball is released at the top of a vertical jump.

CONT

By far the most common shots in the modern game, however, are jump shots and running one-handers. The jump shot is exactly that : the shooter jumps straight up and releases the ball with one or two hands at the instant that he is at the top of his jump out of reach of the defender, who can seldom make his counterjump soon enough.

CONT

Very often the armed forces of belligerents consist throughout the war of their regular armies only; but it happens frequently that irregular forces take part. Of such irregular forces two different kinds are to be distinguished-first, such as are authorised by the belligerents; and, secondly, such as are acting on their own initiative, and on their own account, without special authorization. Formerly it was a recognised rule of International Law that only the members of authorised irregular forces enjoyed the privileges due to the members of the armed forces of belligerents; members of unauthorised irregular forces were considered to be war criminals, and could be shot when captured. During the Franco-German War in 1870, the Germans acted throughout according to this rule with regard to the so-called "franctireurs", requesting the production of special authorization form the French Government from every irregular combatant whom they captured, failing which he was shot. But according to Art. 1 of the Hague Regulations this rule is now obsolete.

"Blow" is not a standard term used in tennis circles. However it can be used to describe the hitting the ball with the tennis racket. Related terms : drive, shot. Important nuance : a "stroke" implies early preparation and a complete follow through. If one were to envision a stroke, one would see a series of sequences, ending with a "shot", i. e. the result of all of the above. A "shot" implies a quick, sharp movement because one is focusing on the end result, not the series of sequences leading up to it. A "blow" is rather a blunt, general term similar in meaning to "shot". Although many would like to maintain these nuances in English, "shot" and "stroke" can often be used synonymously. "Blow" is used only rarely. Note, however that although there are two possible equivalents("coup" and "frappe") in French, neither are semantically identical to the English offerings.
