The International Action Programme on Water and Sustainable Agricultural Development(IAP-WASAD) was created by FAO with the cooperation of other UN organizations as part of a strategy to implement the Mar del Plata Action Plan for the 1990s. IAP-WASAD identified five priority areas of action and some common measures requiring concerted action to realize sustainable agricultural development. It pointed out that scarcity of water is a major constraint for the further agricultural development of arid and semi-arid countries. Without renewable water supplies and appropriate and reliable water control and management, sustainable agricultural development is simply not possible.

Le Programme d'action international sur l'eau et le développement agricole durable (IAP-WASAD) a été défini par la FAO en collaboration avec d'autres organisations du système des Nations Unies dans le cadre d'une stratégie visant à mettre en œuvre le Plan d'action de Mar del Plata pour les années 90. L'IAP-WASAD définit cinq domaines prioritaires d'action et plusieurs mesures communes appelant une action concertée en vue de rendre possible un développement agricole durable. Il fait valoir que la rareté de l'eau est une contrainte majeure pour la poursuite du développement agricole dans les pays à climat aride ou semi-aride. The mandate of the Commission is to promote a comprehensive global debate on the relationship between intervention and state sovereignty. Reconciling the international community's responsibility to act in the face of massive violations of humanitarian norms while respecting the sovereign rights of states poses a unique challenge. The United Nations Assistance Mission for Rwanda(UNAMIR) was established in 1993 under UN Security Council resolution 918 to contribute to the security and protection of displaced persons, refugees and civilians at risk in Rwanda. UNAMIR provided security and support for the distribution of relief supplies and humanitarian relief and was authorized to take action, in self-defence, against persons or groups who threatened protected sites and populations, as well as UN and other humanitarian personnel. Ceased to exist in 1996.

The aim of this program of the Canadian Committee for the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations is to find someone who has contributed to world understanding and to relate their story. This person could be someone who has has worked on a project in Canada which has contributed to UN issues on global understanding, for example, cleaned up the environment, participated in a peace march, taken action against racism, organized a clothing/food drive, spoken on conflict resolution and non-violence, promoted health and discouraged use of drugs and alcohol. UN issues include peace, security, education, health, poverty, environment, and manymore. Or it could be someone who has worked on an international cause, either overseas or in Canada(for example, a missionary, a volunteer for CUSO or on an international agriculture project; or has worked for the United Nations(for example, as a peacekeeper, administrator or diplomat).
