Record number: 17, Textual support number: 1 CONT
One of the most notable characteristics of an estuary is the differing gradients of salinity that are present... These gradients may appear both horizontally and vertically within the water column. Under flood tide conditions the layer of surface water coming into the estuary is moving at a faster rate than the bottom layer. As the tidal waters come in contact with the fresh water moving out of the river, the more dense salt water sinks to the bottom causing the fresh water to rise. The result of this tidal movement is a mixing of the fresh and salt water from the top to the bottom referred to as tidal over-mixing, and a salt water "wedge" being formed. The wedge is narrowest at the head of the river and it broadens out towards the mouth of the river. 6, record 17, English, - salt%2Dwater%20wedge

The process of debris movement in periglacial regions has been variously defined and a number of terms have been suggested. First J. G. Anderson(1906) proposed the term "solifluction"(solum-soil, fluere-flow) for slow movement of debris, soaked with water, from higher to lower slopes. Solifluction term was replaced by "congelifluction" of J. Daylik(1951) to incorporate only soilflow in the periglacial climate having permafrost lying below an active layer. K. Bryan(1946) used the term "cryoturbation" which included all types of mass-movement of regolith under periglacial environment. Recently, "gelifluction" is used in place of "congelifluction. The acellular dermal graft is processed from human donor skin obtained from approved tissue banks. In processing, the epidermis is removed, and the remaining dermal layer is washed in detergent solutions to remove cellular components. After the tissue has been decellularized, the acellular collagen matrix is then cryoprotected and rapidly freeze-dried by a patented process to preserve biochemical and structural integrity. This packaged acellular dermis can be stored under refrigeration for at least 2 years. Rehydration of the freeze-dried dermis for a minimum of 10 minutes in physiologic saline using a normal sterile procedure yields a pliable collagen template for cell repopulation. 5, record 26, English, - acellular%20dermal%20graft

Virga is frequently seen trailing from altocumulus and altostratus clouds, but also is discernible below the bases of high-level cumuliform clouds from which precipitation is falling into a dry subcloud layer. It typically exhibits a hooked form in which the streaks descend nearly vertically just under the precipitation source but appear to be almost horizontal at their lower extremities. Such curvature of virga can be produced simply by effects of strong vertical wind shear, but ordinarily it results from the fact that droplet or crystal evaporation decreases the particle terminal fall velocity near the ends of the streaks. Under some conditions, virga are associated with dry microbursts, which are formed as a product of the evaporation. 7, record 34, English, - virga

What happens in rice milling? When rice arrives at the mill, it is ushered through a series of sorting machines, separating the kernels, encased in an inedible hull or husk, from any debris. The rice is then sent on its way through the multifaceted processing journey. The rough rice passes through "sheller" machines that remove the hull. What remains is brown rice, with the bran layers still surrounding the kernel. The grains of brown rice are milled by machines that rub the grains together under pressure. This abrasion removes the bran layer, revealing white or "polished" rice. 2, record 35, English, - rice%20milling

Let me summarize by saying the entire plan involves a fluorinated polymer base with... a piezo-electric layer of coating [under] your skis. In other words, a tiny battery is used to apply an electric field that changes the coefficient of friction with regard to ice and water, meaning... it makes your skis more slippery. A miniature computer chip senses the temperature and humidity in the snow as you ski, and continually adjusts the electric field to give you the best glide possible. 2, record 36, English, - chlorinated%20lubrication

NOTwax, unlike other fluorocarbons, is totally inert and won’t stick to anything. So how does it stay on ski and snowboard bases? Extruded and sintered bases are essentially solid. They have no porosity except at a molecular level, but will absorb small amounts of certain liquids (such as solvents). Sintered bases are more amorphous (less crystalline) and have more ability to absorb than extruded bases. Ordinary waxes and base preparations rely on surface bonding and can’t soak in more than a few microns. But NOTwax has such low viscosity and low surface tension that it will penetrate deeply into sintered bases. It stays there by capillary attraction (like water in a sponge) until the base contacts snow (or another solid surface). The wicking action of snow against the base is stronger than the capillary attraction of the base to lubricate the surface. The result is that you feel like you are riding on ball bearings. 3, record 36, English, - chlorinated%20lubrication

The Common Departmental Financial System(CDFS) is a comprehensive on-line departmental financial management and reporting system designed to simplify and streamline financial administration. CDFS was developed to respond to the changing needs for financial management information in the federal government. It complements recommendations outlined in Public Service 2000 which called for departmental line managers to assume a greater responsibility for financial management of the areas under their control. Offered by Public Works and Government Services Canada(PWGSC), CDFS is an optional service. It replaces the FINCON and FINCAP systems. CDFS is a distributed system. Under the current configuration, the PWGSC Mainframe acts as a host while the presentation layer resides at the client site on a Local Area Network(LAN) or workstation. 2, record 42, English, - Common%20Departmental%20Financial%20System

Today it is possible to bond most the... materials with synthetic adhesives. The essential difference is not found in the formation of a sufficient adhesive strength to the adherends but in the properties of the adhesive layers formed by them under mechanical stress or long term influences.... The connection between the deformation properties of the adherends and the adhesive layers must be considered. For materials with a high deformation capacity under stress and/or different thermal expansion properties adhesives with flexible properties in the adhesive layer should be used and vice versa(within certain limits the thickness of the adhesive layer can be increased). 2, record 47, English, - adhesive%20layer

The tomato is a weak-stemmed herbaceous plant, capable of perennial growth but normally cultivated as an annual. Under natural conditions, it forms a spreading, straggling bush; some modern cultivars, such as "Amateur", can be allowed to grow without support and with a minimum of pruning. The fruits of "bush" tomatoes need protecting from contact with the soil by means of a layer of straw. Most cultivated tomatoes are trained as a single stem up a string or cane and all side shoots are removed soon after they appear. 2, record 57, English, - bush%20tomato

A typical induction innerseal consists of a pulp board liner, a layer of wax, aluminum foil, and a polymer that is compatible with the lid of the plastic container. During induction sealing the cap, with the inner seal, is placed on the container. As the container and cap pass under the induction coil, a varying magnetic field heats the aluminum foil, which melts the wax and polymer, sealing it to the lip of the container. Thus, the innerseal leaves an hermetic layer of foil and polymer coating on the top of the bottle. If the foil seal is broken, any tampering is immediately apparent to the consumer. 1, record 61, English, - induction%20seal

In a single-crystal blade casting, the first element to solidify is a "starter block" attached to the root of the [turbine] blade by a narrow helical passage in the mould. The helical passage obstructs the growth of multiple crystal boundaries, with the result that the blade is formed from a single crystal. This crystal propagates in two halves around the strong-back. The two halves of the blade can then be joined by a process called "transient liquid phase" bonding, in which the halves are mated around a foil "gasket" of the same alloy as the blade--coated with boron to reduce its melting point--and joined under pressure. The gasket and the thin layer of metal immediately adjacent to it melt, the boron dissipates completely and the part solidifies while still under pressure. As far as can be ascertained, the join produced by this means in a single-crystal blade is effectively perfect. 1, record 69, English, - single%2Dcrystal%20blade%20casting

1, record 69, French, - coul%C3%A9e%20des%20aubes%20%C3%A0%20structure%20mono%2Dcristalline

The gasket and the thin layer of metal immediately adjacent to it melt, the boron dissipates completely and the part solidifies while still under pressure. As far as can be ascertained, the join produced by this means in a single-crystal blade is effectively perfect. 1, record 70, English, - strong%2Dback

1, record 70, French, - pi%C3%A8ce%20de%20renforcement
