The insecticidal nature of [Bacillus thuringiensis] is attributed to crystal-like proteins that are produced by Bt cells during the spore-forming stage of its life cycle. The crystal protein in Bt kills insects by binding to and disrupting the midgut(stomach) membranes. Susceptible insects will stop feeding within hours of ingesting Bt and will generally die within 2-5 days. The specificity of Bt lies in the fact that particular stomach enzymes(present only in certain insects) must activate the crystal proteins before they are considered toxic. Under normal conditions the crystal protein is insoluble(not active) and is therefore safe to humans, mammals and the majority of insects.

One of the most notable characteristics of an estuary is the differing gradients of salinity that are present... These gradients may appear both horizontally and vertically within the water column. Under flood tide conditions the layer of surface water coming into the estuary is moving at a faster rate than the bottom layer. As the tidal waters come in contact with the fresh water moving out of the river, the more dense salt water sinks to the bottom causing the fresh water to rise. The result of this tidal movement is a mixing of the fresh and salt water from the top to the bottom referred to as tidal over-mixing, and a salt water "wedge" being formed. The wedge is narrowest at the head of the river and it broadens out towards the mouth of the river.

Today nearly 2, 000 different enzymes are known. Many have been isolated in pure homogeneous form, and at least 200 have been crystallized.... NMR studies of globular proteins in solution give data consistent with the crystal structure, as has been amply demonstrated for lysozyme. However, where there is an equilibrium among two or more conformations of the enzyme in solution, crystallization may select out only one of the conformations. [alpha]-Chymotrypsin has a substantial fraction of an inactive conformation present under the conditions of crystallization, but only the active form of the enzyme crystallizes. An allosteric effector molecule that changes the conformation of the protein in solution may have no effect on the crystalline protein, as has been found, for example, with phosphorylase b. The enzyme is frozen in one conformation, with the crystal lattice forces preventing any conformational change. On the other hand, the addition of an effector to phosphorylase a causes the crystals first to crack and then to anneal, giving crystals of the enzyme in a second conformation.

Pyrohydrolysis is a lixiviant regeneration process in which metal chlorides obtained from leaching either primary or secondary raw materials can be thermally decomposed into metal oxides and hydrogen chloride. A term which refers to conditions where, in a controlled-potential experiment the electrode current, and in a controlled-current experiment the electrode potential, is solely determined by the rate of mass transport to (or away from) the electrode. For instance, the current measured in a controlled-potential experiment is then called a transport controlled current.

OBS

Under conditions of transport control there is non influence of the kinetics of a reaction taking place at the electrode or in the volume of the solution, except in the case of the limiting current. This implies that the electrode reaction and homogeneous reactions, if present, are virtually at equilibrium(in spite of the current flow).

The use of growing cells in suspension as biocatalysts is generally termed fermentation. Such processes may be distinguished as batch, fed batch or continuous depending on the kinetic relationship between addition of substrate and harvesting of product. Non-growing systems include the use of suspensions, cells retained within a semipermeable membrane, or cells immobilized in or on a solid support. Such immobilized cells may be used in a fixed bed, expanded bed, fluid bed or fully mixed system.... Although many so-called fermentation reactions are carried out under aerobic conditions, these are of little interest in the present context since, when oxygen is used as the terminal electron acceptor, the production of low molecular weight metabolites of the type required is restricted and a high proportion of the carbon in the feedstock is converted into cell biomass.
